General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!

Would You Play a Universal Rating System event to save CFC membership or rating cost?
Would You Play a Universal Rating System event to save CFC membership or rating cost?
This is my first time attempting a poll....not clear how it works so I may screw up.
The Universal Rating System has moved from a proposal to an actual implementation. It turns out that this is being run as a central processing unit for calculating chess ratings using a hidden "black box" formula (or at least they are not yet disclosing a formula). That's the bad news, the good news is that getting a rating will become FREE for all players (not sure who is paying for the service). This appears on the surface to be an attempt to undermine the very foundation of FIDE and all its satellite federations, including the CFC.
Given all of that, would you enter a tournament in which you paid no CFC membership fee or rating fee, and accept the URS rating instead of the typical ELO rating calculated using a known formula by the CFC or FIDE?

Yes, I am willing to accept URS rating to save on CFC membership or rating fee

No, I prefer to remain with valid CFC rating and membership

I'm not sure yet whether I would enter such a URS rated event

What's all this then?

Thanks, Tom, I suppose I should have given separate options for FIDE and CFC ratings.
Based on this very unscientific and small poll, the CFC and FIDE do appear to have deep concerns about what this URS entails for them. I really think the vast base of the chess pyramid will be in favor of saving entry fee costs and may flock to this Universal system. The elite will try and resist as much as possible to save FIDE.

Re: Would You Play a Universal Rating System event to save CFC membership or rating c
What incentive would an organizer have to run a URS event? Seems a bit parasitical in concept since they would likely use FIDE ratings to start with. If they succeed then Kasparov will control everything. Doesn't fill me with warm, fuzzy feelings.

Paul, please correct me if I am wrong (since I haven’t done any research here), but this Universal Rating System appears to be nothing more than just taking FIDE ratings (of various time controls) and adding some secret formula to generate 1 overall rating.
I looked up my Universal Rating = 1789. There is no tournament history or any explanation of how it was calculated. So why would I care?
Anyway, if that is all it is, it is more precise to call it simply a rating calculation. A rating system includes the collect of tournament data, use of a formula that is transparent and credible, integrity checks, a system to correct errors, and acceptance by the players and organizers.
Don’t forget the old saying: You get what you pay for.

Bob, I'm as much in the dark as you are. However, from the main page at universalratings.com there is this statement:
"It is critical to note, however, that the URS™ does not incorporate Elo ratings anywhere within its actual calculation."
It does make one wonder how then the numbers come out so similar to Elo ratings.
Therefore the FIDE ratings are supposedly not being used at all. In fact, in the FAQ section there is a question about what initial rating does a new player start out with, and the answer is that there is NO initial rating. And there are no provisional ratings. They say that as soon as you've played a single game with a time control >= game in 5 minutes, you will get a URS rating. Just how "accurate" such a rating would be is another matter.
Whatever they are trying to do -- and it does look like it is an attempt to subvert the entire FIDE organization -- I think it is a huge blunder to keep the rating formula hidden. This alone will keep most people from adopting it or trusting it. How would you ever dispute your rating?
But if they make the formula public and still offer to do the service for free, that is a game changer. The base of the chess pyramid is notoriously money-conscious. There could be a gradual snowball effect until the movement to URS reaches critical mass.
At such time, the next step for this organization would logically be to start awarding their own titles based on URS ratings.
