        If my memory serves me well, Donald Sutherland taught chess for Chess'n Math in Toronto at some point...we also donated some chess sets to one of his causes in the third world.

          Donald Sutherland is a Saint Johner. The role he plays above is a recurring theme in stories about reversals in chess games. X is in a desperate position; an unlikely Y offers advice: voila! – victory. The earliest example may be the Dilaram’s mate. Usually the story is added to the problem as a dressing, but the above – given Mr. Sutherland’s additional connection to chess – seems likely enough.
          Another Saint John actor from way back with a connection to chess is Walter Pidgeon.
