Grand Chess Tour 2017
February 6, 2017
I admit to getting confused between the Grand Chess Tour and the Grand Prix. A lot of money for chess but perhaps the word “grand” is being overused.
The 2017 Grand Chess Tour consists of five events: three rapid and blitz chess, and two classical chess.
Paris GCT June 19 – June 25
Leuven GCT June 26 – July 2
Sinquefield Cup July 31 – August 12
St. Louis Rapid August 13 - August 20
London Chess Classic Nov. 30 - December 11
Participants
Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Sergey Karjakin, Wesley So, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Viswanathan Anand.
Vladimir Kramnik was originally on the list but had to decline.
Each event will have a wildcard but their names have yet to be confirmed.
The 2017 Grand Prix has two events before Paris-Leuven, being Sharjah, UAE Feb.18-27 and Moscow, Russia May 12-21 and then they squeeze in an event, Geneva, Switzerland July 6-15 and then Palma de Mallorca Nov. 16-25 just before the London Classic Nov. 30.
Eight major tournaments between February and the end of the year!
Just glancing at the two lists of participants it seems to me that Nakamura, MVL and Ian Nepomniachtchi are on both.
