February 13, 2017
General information of the festival:
The International Chess Festival "Aeroflot Open 2017" will be held in Moscow from 20 February (the date of arrival) to 3 March 2017 (the date of departure).
The Aeroflot Open Chess Festival, which is popular throughout the world, will be held in February 2017 for the 15th time. This major event is open to chess players of most varied qualification: from unrated to having a very high rating. As before, the festival is held “under the wings” of our leading air company –“ Aeroflot – Russian airlines”. The festival will be held in the hotel “Cosmos”, which is one of the largest in Moscow ( over 1700 rooms). The hotel is located in one of the most beautiful and environmentally pure Moscow districts within 20-minutes travelling from Red Square and only 200-m walking from the nearest subway station (VDNKh). This time the festival has the guaranteed prize fund amounting to EUR 140 000 (taking into account the prizes for the Blitz Tournament).
Three Open Tournaments (A, B and C) are made up according to the rating of the participants, and are 9-round Swiss – tournaments. Naturally, the greatest interest is aroused by A tournament, requiring from a participant a rating above 2550 and in which usually take part a number of extra class players.
In addition to the Open Tournaments, a Blitz Tournament will be held within the festival.
The official accommodation for the participants and also the venue of the Tournament will be at the “Cosmos” hotel.
The Organizers of the Festival are the "Aeroflot-Russian Airlines", the Russian Chess Federation and the Association of Chess Federations.

________
Chris Rice on the EC Forum: Round 1 of 9 of the 2017 edition is due to begin on February 21. As I understand the rules one needs a minimum rating of 2550 to play in A-Group and there are 66 players, 20 of whom are over 2650 and 5 over 2700 so a classy field but, unfortunately, none of the top ten.
In addition there are another 24 players below that rating who managed to get in for whatever reason but notably the 86th ranked player in the 90 strong field is the Indian prodigy, Praggnanandhaa (2455), who you might remember from the London Classic and Hastings.
Leonard Barden in reply: Just as notable is the 89th ranked in the field, Praggna's Uzbek rival Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Four months ago he achieved the youngest ever GM norm, a 2679 performance at St Petersburg (4/6 v GMs rated 2560-2660). With that result, he is ahead in the race between them to break Karjakin's GM age record of 12 years 7 months.
