    Reykjavik Open 2017

    March 11, 2017

    From Peter Doggers at chess.com:

This year's Reykjavik Open will see three 2700 GMs in action: GMs Anish Giri, Dmitry Andreikin and Baadur Jobava. The annual open tournament in Iceland will be held April 19-27.

After four years, GM Anish Giri returns to the Reykjavik, and again the Dutchman is the top seed. But his rating is 47 points higher than in 2013. Giri's wife IM Sopiko Guramishvili will also be playing and is the 57th seed.

Giri's main rivals are GMs Dmitry Andreikin and Baadur Jobava. Andreikin was also the second seed last year, behind Shakhriyar Mamedyarov — who will be playing the Gashimov Memorial instead. Jobava will be playing the tournament for the first time.

The field is again very strong, with some big names among the 2600+ group: GMs Alexei Shirov (returning for the first time to Iceland since 1992!), Sergey Movsesian, Gawain Jones, Santosh Vidit Gujrathi, Gata Kamsky, and Abhijeet Gupta.

There's also the 2015 winner GM Erwin l'Ami (together with his wife Alina), Women's World Championship semifinalist GM Harika Dronavalli, the record holder for most Chess Olympiad games, GM Eugenio Torre, the world's youngest IM Praggnanandhaa R. His sister WIM Ramesh Babu Vaishali will be playing as well.

      Reykjavik Open 2017

      April 6, 2017

The official site is up and running:

      https://www.reykjavikopen.com

The Reykjavik open 2017 will be held for the 32nd time from April 19th till April 27th, 2017 in Harpa, the 28.000 sq. m. Concert- and conference centre. The 2017 tournament is expected to be very strong.

As in earlier years, several chess-related events will take place at the same time as the tournament, including the now famous Reykjavík Open Chess Pub Quiz and the Golden Circle sightseeing tour that includes stops at Geysir and Bobby Fischer’s final resting place in the southern part of Iceland. Iceland is one of the most attractive places in the world to visit and play in chess tournaments.

The City of Reykjavík has sponsored the tournament since its inception in 1964, when Mikhail Tal won it with a record 12½ points out of 13. The tournament was initially held every two years, but has since 2008 taken place every year. It was closed in its early years, but has been an open event since the 1980s. Throughout its history the Reykjavik Open has featured many of the strongest chess players in the world at the time, including Mikhail Tal, Nona Gaprindashvili, David Bronstein, Vasili Smyslov, Bent Larsen, Friðrik Ólafsson, Mark Taimanov, Lev Polugaevsky, Jan Timman, Victor Korchnoi, Samuel Reshevsky, Anthony Miles, Nigel Short, Hikaru Nakamura, Judit Polgar, Magnus Carlsen, Alexander Grischuk, Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, Wei Yi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Wesley So, Pavel Eljanov and Hou Yifan.

The Reykjavík Open has enjoyed such an enviable reputation that more than 200 chess masters registered interest in participating last year and we expect be a similar number of GMs in the 2017 tournament. As in previous years, the goal of organizers to is invite many of the youngest and most promising chess players in the world, as well as the strong women players. 2017 promises to be as big and diverse as previous editions!

        Reykjavik Open 2017

        April 19, 2017

        From The Iceland Review:

The Reykjavík Chess Open, which starts today, will be the biggest and hardest-fought in the competition’s 53-year history.
There are around 280 players registered from 45 different countries—including 35 Grandmasters—which is a new record.
Around 180 non-Icelandic chess players are taking part in the competition this year, which is another record. Most of the overseas competitors come from the USA, India and Canada. But with 12 entrants, the high level of Faroese participation is also gratefully noted by organizers.

The organizers claim that the Reykjavík Open is more of a chess festival than a chess competition, in the strictest sense, and there will be an array of side events all through the competition, including lectures, a speed chess competition, children’s chess competition, a pub quiz, a chess players’ football competition, a backgammon competition and a Golden Circle tour—naturally including a stop at Bobby Fischer’s grave.

Nearly 100 Icelandic chess players are involved in the Open, including three Grandmasters. The highest scoring of them is Hannes Hlíf Stefánsson, the most successful player in the history of the Reykjavík Open.

This strong elite top group at open swisses is becoming the norm.

It is obvious that in elite chess, there is no longer enough money to go around, especially with rating inflation, and more good players. So elite are having to scrabble for supplementary income at what used to be almost amateur events.

However, from a chess promotion point of view, I couldn't think of a better strategy!

                      Re: Reykjavik Open 2017

I dropped in to the playing site today, near the end of the second round of the day, and I just love the layout, the people working behind the scenes, it was great to renew acquaintances with arbiters, etc. At first glance, this seems like an awesome event to play in, and the Icelanders spoke nicely of the many Canadians in attendance. I quickly bumped into the Plotkins at the end of breakfast, and Jonathan Yu and his mom. Tomorrow will be another touristy day, so hope to meet more of the Canadians on Saturday.
