The round was delayed today by two hours so that the players who wished to could take the Gold Circle and Fischer Tour. Some photos of sights on the island were shown. Scenes from the Star Wars movie The Force Awakens taking place on the icy planet Hoth were filmed in Iceland, on Eyjafjallajökull.

Bobby Fischer’s gravesite is near a church, about an hour from Reykjavik. They showed a photo of Eugene Torre, Bobby’s old friend, by the gravestone.

Simon said that he also visited Bokin, the used bookstore in the centre of Reykjavik, where Fischer used to sit each day, reading, during the five years he was there.

Bókin was founded in Reykjavik in 1964 by Gudmundur Egil but throughout the years it changed many owners only to be bought by Gisli Ari Bragason in 1997, who has owned it ever since. Perhaps an interesting fact from Bókin's history is that it was Bobby Fischer's favorite bookstore ever since his 1972 victory in Iceland over Boris Spassky. Bókin is the place where he would spend hours, just sitting in the back of the store. It is also said that in the last years of his life, when Bobby became paranoid and refused to have his mail delivered to his home, he picked it up at no place other than the store. The last time Bobby Fischer visited Bókin was October 2005.

Simon said that he was going to post some pictures of the inside of the store on his blog The Ginger GM.

There are many interesting matches as usual – the two for us are Hambleton vs Ramirez and Praggnanandhaa vs Beliavsky. The former is 11 years old and the latter is 63.

Praggna’s older sister Vaishali is herself an international master and is playing in the tournament. Fiona interviewed her yesterday. She is playing Erwin L’ami today and has beaten Eugene Torre among others.

During a break, they show Icelandic food being prepared for a restaurant. The one I had not seen before is called hot spring rye bread. One option in cooking this bread is to put the dough into special wooden casks in the ground close to a hot spring and pick it up the next day. Absolutely delicious!

I was studying in England during the Fischer-Spassky Match and there was a contest – solve the chess problem, send it in to the newspaper and you might win a week at the Match. I hesitated to enter because I read of fish baked in sour cream and dill sauce and wasn’t sure whether I would like it. Ah, the weakness of youth. Giving up a week at Fischer-Spassky because I wasn’t sure I would like a fish dish!

A Note on the Icelandic Language

When an Icelander arrives at an office building and sees "Solarfri" posted, they need no further explanation for the empty premises: The word means "when staff get an unexpected afternoon off to enjoy good weather." But the revered Icelandic language, seen by many as a source of identity and pride, is being undermined by the widespread use of English, both for mass tourism and in the voice-controlled artificial intelligence devices coming into vogue. Linguistics experts, studying the future of a language spoken by fewer than 400,000 people, wonder if this is the beginning of the end for the Icelandic tongue. Former President Vigdis Finnbogadottir tells the AP unless Iceland takes steps to protect its language, "Icelandic will end in the Latin bin.

The increasing use of English as a universal communicator diminishes the role of Icelandic. The problem is compounded because many new computer devices are designed to recognize English but they do not understand Icelandic. It ranks among the weakest and least-supported languages in terms of digital technology—along with Irish Gaelic, Latvian, Maltese, and Lithuanian—according to a report by the Multilingual Europe Technology Alliance assessing 30 European languages. Iceland's Ministry of Education estimates about $8.8 million is needed for seed funding for an open-access database to help tech developers adapt Icelandic as a language option.

The round was delayed today by two hours so that the players who wished to could take the Gold Circle and Fischer Tour. Some photos of sights on the island were shown. Scenes from the Star Wars movie The Force Awakens taking place on the icy planet Hoth were filmed in Iceland, on Eyjafjallajökull. ....

My wife, daughter and I were very fortunate in being able to spend ten days in Iceland in 2015, which included a drive around the ring road. It is a wholly remarkable place geologically and in terms of the Icelanders themselves. I hope in addition to the chess you get an opportunity to explore the country a bit, or a least a pricey splash in the Blue Lagoon near Keflavik.

I have warned anyone who cares to listen to me prattle on about the place that within about 24 hours of winning the lottery, I will have sold my cats, packed a couple of sweaters and moved there for good.

There are a number of movies that were shot in Iceland in addition to The Force Awakens - generally whenever a bleak, sometimes post-apocalyptic countryside is needed. Segments of Game of Thrones were filmed there as well.

A Note on the Icelandic Language

... the revered Icelandic language ....

I studied Islenska, the Icelandic language, for about 4 months in advance of our trip, just for fun - completely unnecessary as generally Icelanders are completely bilingual (Islenska and English) and I believe often trilingual (Danish). It is an absurdly hard language from a grammar perspective, but a fun one concerning pronunciation (including the sideways spit required to get the double "ll" out correctly). It would be a shame for the language to be lost as a living language.

Anan fought very hard here. Things are clearly going his way. Black threw away the win on move 48...h4?? Rxb4+ first so that if Ke5, the black a pawn will queen with check. Instructive ending. In the old days, Anan would get this pairing automatically, but now, FIDE does not allow 'norm' pairings, so only if computer is nice enough to generate this pairing. In any event, let's hope Anan gets his title soon, so he can shave that beard.

Round Eight continued

Iceland has always been favorable to chess, except in 2010. Can you remember what happened then?

The world championship match between World Champion, Anand and Topalov was due to begin 21st April 2010 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Anand who was based in Madrid, Spain got as far as Frankfurt, Germany. A volcano eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland spewed lava and ash into Europe's airspace crippling air travel in the region for the last four days. It was quite impossible for Anand to reach Sofia in time for the 21st April opening ceremony.

Anand's manager requested a three-day postponement to enable the delegation to find alternative ways to reach the venue. This was refused by the organisers on 19 April. Anand finally reached Sofia on 20 April, after a 40-hour road journey. The first game was consequently delayed by one day.

Topalov won the first game, as white. Anand won the Match 6.5-5.5 though.

When I first started collecting chess books, there were two large volumes by Willard Fiske generally available:

Chess in Iceland and in Icelandic Literature (1905), 400 pages

Chess Tales and Chess Miscellanies (1912), 428 pages

Fiske was born in 1831, became a librarian and professor at Cornell in Ithaca, New York in 1868 and made a reputation as an authority of Northern European languages, and the Icelandic language and culture in particular. In the summer of 1879, he visited Iceland for three months, travelling on the island with two other Americans and endearing himself to the residents by organizing donations of books from America.

If you are interested in early chess in Iceland, you can pick up a facsimile copy of Fiske’s book these days for a reasonable price.

However, I am told that one edition is badly scanned and therefore unreadable – so, buyer beware.

Simon Williams and Fiona Steil-Antoni are in the commentators chairs again today.

Simon is asked if any modern players have openings named after them. There are certainly variations named after people like Kramnik, who has a variation in the Sicilian. Jobava has often been credited with the opening: 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. Bf4.

Fiona says that two players that have really impressed her in this tournament are playing each other today – Aman Hambleton and Jorden Van Foreest. Both are going for a grandmaster norm.

Simon and Fiona discuss people eating at the board. She says that she would never eat anything noisy. She has no problem with people eating during play if they don’t disturb you. It seems that chocolate cake is all right but potato chips and a bowl of curry would be verboten.

Simon said he was told off by Danny King at the board when he was 12 years old. He had just opened a can of Coke and it was quite noisy and Danny waved him away with his finger.

A friend of Simon’s, Robert Lagerman, comes on. He is going to live in Greenland. He said that there was no chess there until 2003 and he is trying to promote it there. In the isolated villages , hungry polar bears are a constant danger. Some of the problems in Greenland are the same as those in Canada’s far north. Robert is going to live in a fjord on the north-east coast permanently to play chess and hunt polar bears and Simon has an invitation to come and play. The flight from Reykjavik to Greenland is an hour, forty-five minutes. In case you are ever asked for it on Jeopardy!, the capital of Greenland is Nuuk.

It seems that Aman has an uphill fight to get a draw against Jorden but he does it. The players sit and discuss the ending.

Anish Giri comes on. He had the game of the day against Donchenko. Everyone else at the top had drawn but he won. What a reversal over “drawing Giri”. He sacrificed a couple of pawns to win but during the game he thought he actually blundered one!

He had his bishops raking the diagonals. Finally, from a beautiful position, Anish said it was time to cash in and win. Have a look at the ending with black’s queen on f7.

Simon: Do you have any preference for whom you play tomorrow?

Anish: The lowest-rated player. I’ve beyond the point when I wanted to meet the highest-rated opponent in the Bundesliga. Now the weaker player, the better - to win the tournament.

- Gawain lost to Praggnanandhaa. It certainly looked like he might have been winning after the enterprising 48 Rxf7 but he wasn't and the tactics didn't work out for him. Not sure where this leaves Praggnanandhaa in his quest for a GM norm though.

This is Aman's second norm, and he has the rating qualification, so he needs only one more.

AFAIK, this is Michael's first IM Norm; so 2 more +rating. CORRECTION: MK's second IM Norm (first was a few years ago)
