Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

As long as Neil does not resell the manual or edit it to remove the CFC logo and titles it is not likely that we (under the current executive) will try to enforce our copyright against him. We encourage that the manual be widely distributed in order to help our mandate that chess be studied widely. It is clear that the manual comes from the CFC if the person downloading it looks at the PDF at all. He is encouraging people to study chess and using our manual which can only go to our benefit. I have been told that FIDE uses our manual in some FIDE chess in the schools programs. It is a pretty good manual for beginners.
If we still have the original manuscript we should probably edit out the equipment advertising and perhaps update it with Strategy and Games ads.
It's no surprise the Chess Federation of Canada has lost sight of this most valuable tool ...no surprise at all.
Hardly, I use it all the time and recommend its use all the time. Claiming it as your own simply reinforces your eccentricity. Chess players are clever they will figure it out when you try to claim someone else's work as your own.

Sorry, I don't believe you. Anyone in your position would have done something, anything, to polish it up! If only you knew the true value of such an asset, and the respect it deserves.
Instead what do we see?
We see the exact same thing as with our national trophies, etc., etc..

I really don't care if you believe me. The teachers who I gave the link to at the Windsor Chess Challenge appeared to appreciate it.
As for the trophies they went awol in the early 1980s and 1960s which is a bit before my time as a chess politician.
As for failing, I'm sure I had the opportunity for an even more spectacular failure than your attempt to organize the CO/CYCC which had to be removed from your over reaching hands but somehow we managed to muddle our way through last year.
What happened to the trophy for the Canadian Closed. I know it was in Ottawa at the CFC office in 1995.
I'm not sure. I believe that some things went into a storage locker in Ottawa for a while which was then cleared out around 2011 or 2012 with some items being stored by the ED for a while. I am not sure if the Canadian Closed trophy made it into this group of items or disappeared between 1995 and 2011. I am sure some emails will be sent around about this this evening.

What have you exactly done in the last forty years to help chess flourish in Canada? I haven't heard anything beyond the fact that you are a lonely guy who is a bit spiteful when told to run along because the adults in the CFC office have to get some work done.

If you mean the Les Bunning trophy, I took to Montreal for the Zonal in 2012 -- you can see pix of it being presented to Bator -- then took it to Ottawa. AFAIR, I gave it back to Les -- though I might have taken it on to Bob in Burlington later that summer.

For the Society of Chess Aficionados money is not really an issue ...not at the moment anyways. What is an issue is what I would like to see SoCA accomplish. I'd like to see it establish and maintain a unique position of support for chess entities such as chess clubs, chess orgs, etc., and support for the stand alone chess events and tournaments too ... and of course the outright unapologetic brazen promotion of our game.
So hey, I want to share some freshness:
A first look see at a fresh new chess visual vocabulary ... action and intent symbols. Chess moves as indicated by the different symbols shown upon the squares for each move of a chess piece's path. The path of the chess piece is indicated by a line which joins one move/squares to another. In the link graphic is the path typically seen in the opening moves by white's light squared bishop in the Ruy Lopez. From here I'll develop a symbol's chart which will define each symbol, I've done & re-re-done about 20 or so now.
Why am I exploring this form of supplemental visual communication? Because it's awsum in a very techy sort of way! Great sutt for GUIs, FUIs, and HUDs too! And for practical reasons too (meh), we need background graphics on our website.
