General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Larry, this discussion board is in serious need of a moderator. Please look at postings in the Trump thread. The posts have devolved to base insults and name calling. They have no bearing to the purpose of this board, namely discussion of chess in general and chess in Canada in particular.
Please take action on this matter. This sort of postings does not serve Chesstalk and in fact harms the reputation of this board. Thank you.
Devolved to base insults and name calling? The president of the CFC used a race-based insult pages ago. Why didn't you speak up then?
I agree that Belzberg has a brought a new level of vulgarity to the boards, but the racist nature of Whissel's and Drkulec's remarks are far more alarming and worthy of moderation. Belzberg has a potty mouth but he's harmless.
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)
I actually have experience moderating both other message boards, as well as Twitch chats, which are known for being both cruel as well as chaotic. In some Twitch chats, you can have over 100,000 people talking at once, all competing for the attention of the masses. It is quite the sight to behold. By contrast, the slow and precise nature of the posts on Chesstalk would be a cinch to handle. Just let me know!

Alarming and worthy of moderation..yes. If it was up to me, I would leave everything as it is though. These posts show true character.
At the risk of offending Larry or putting words in his mouth, he is not really interested in having a moderator to stop the content you reference. He told me so in an email. Anything that drives traffic away was to be avoided. This after I shut down a post after an anti-semitic cartoon was posted. An employee complained that he still had more rants to make. I told him to drop it in a fashion that he often uses on this board, and then I was no longer a moderator. True character revealed all around.

aha ha ha ha. I've got news for you, Lucas. It's an unpaid assignment, you will have no authority to do anything but close threads, you will get zero support from admin., and if you decide to participate in the discussion, some lout who doesn't share your opinion will complain (on another board in a cowardly manner) and get you removed as moderator.
Nikolay is right. The ugly posts show true character. But they also effectively silence many posters. Just look how few women bother to post here.
Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.
Perhaps I could have / should have spoken sooner, but that's beside the point. I'm speaking up now, and my post is still valid.
To sanitize a public forum is treacherous at Best ... the OCC did this awhile back. Soon you'll be banning blocks of IPs, deleting threads with lesser and lesser validation, and before you know it you've turned into a polite shade of gray.
Vibrant communities use colorful language, vulgarity can be a part of that.
If anything I would suggest that CT update this forum to a new template.
I have not looked at the posts in question. We have tried moderators in the past and each time I was getting more complaints than without moderators. BTW, Chesstalk is still for sale :). We have had two offers so far but far below the price we are looking for.
Simply add a 3rd option to "Chesstalk" and "Parlons Echecs" - let's call it "Non-chess" - and all the Trump stuff can go there. Look at other chess boards - they all have other options. Our group isn't active enough to need all kinds of sub-divisions, but "Non-chess" seems sufficient I would think.

If the CFC were in charge of chesstalk we would censor it and ban certain posters. This is precisely the reason that chesstalk would not do well under our control and why it has no value from our point of view as something we might be interested in acquiring. As a result the lying social justice warrior loons like Ben Daswani have free reign to say whatever they will.

You are a liar and clearly no where near as smart as you claim to be. I made no racist posts. Don't you have some murderers or rapists to spring from prison on a technicality?

I don't see the Democratic party in its current form while doubling down on the policies that caused them to lose in 2016 will offer the majority of people what they want. Right now it looks like Pocahontas Elizabeth Warren is the front runner.

Hi Larry,
How much are you asking for chesstalk? How many active posters does the site have and how many unique hits does it get on an average month?
Best,
Sid
