    Reflection in a mirror, darkly

    July 7, 2017

At the prize-giving at Leuven 2017, Maurice Ashley presented Magnus Carlsen with the trophy, which was a golden platter. A photo was snapped with Maurice’s image distorted in the mirror-like surface.

People started photo-shopping the image and the results are hilarious. See some of them at:

You’ll recall that Maurice and Magnus had a little contretemps over the expression “smooth victory”, so in one of the shopped images, Magnus is blinding Maurice with the glare reflected from the plate.

A reader went so far as to link three chess events as the news items of the week:

To Maria Emelianova (the photographer of the pic):

This Magnus/Maurice episode, the Canadian Championship magic Queen, and Garry coming out of retirement is a magic moment in the potential to get chess on mainstream news coverage. The late night comics could roast the Canadian and have fun with your pic - as well as announce Kasparov's coming out of retirement. You don't know Steven Colbert do you?
