  • Underpromotion themes: #2: Larry M. Evans vs. Herman Steiner, USA Ch. 1948, E72, 0-1

This is the second of my planned several posts on underpromotion themes.

In the 1948 U.S.A. Championship, Herman Steiner, granted the IM title by FIDE in 1950, won his only title, with one key win by means of a brilliant underpromotion! He had Black against future GM Larry M. Evans, then age 16, who would go on to earn the GM title in 1957, win five US Championship titles, and become a prolific chess author and columnist. It is a famous game, but perhaps there are some people who haven't seen it before! Enjoy! :) So, here we had a champion using an underpromotion by CHOICE, on the way to his title! IM Steiner represented USA at Stockholm Interzonal 1952, but died young, at age 50, in 1955. GM Evans, a close friend of former World Champion, GM Bobby Fischer, died a few years ago.
