    Hou Yifan wins Biel

    August 2, 2017

Going in to the ninth and final round:

    Leonard Barden:

Hou Yifan poised to win the Biel GM tournament

She was level with Harikrishna on 5.5/8 at the start of this morning's final round, but the Indian has just blundered badly and lost to Bacrot, while Hou, still in play, has a clear edge, though not yet definitely winning, against the local master Georgiadis. Comp evaluation is +0.86 and Georgiadis has 18 moves to make in 10 minutes.

Seems at worst that Hou should tie on 6/9 with Bacrot and Morozevich ahead of Leko, Harikrishna, Navara and Ponomariov and she has serious chances for 6.5, an outright win and a career-best performance.

It's a long way from 1 g4 in the final round at Gibraltar.......

    ________

    Later:

With Leko-Morozevich still in progress, Hou Yifan has beaten Georgiadis and has 6.5 for first with Bacrot 6.0 for second.

Congratulations to Hou Yifan!. She had two knights and a queen in the endgame and translated to a good knight vs bad bishop to win her final game and clear first at Biel. An awesome performance against several of the top 50 in the world!

        - I think Nico resigned way too early
        - out of respect for the new grand dame of chess
        - way stronger after her studies, greater things to come

Her win is covered at chess.com:

          Sam Copeland wrote:

Eight months in, Hou Yifan is celebrating her apex in a tumultuous 2017. She began the year with a controversial low; intentionally throwing a game in the Gibraltar Chess Festival to protest the statistically unlikely (but correct) number of women she was paired against. In Grenke, she received acclaim for opening the tournament with two wins, including a fine victory against world number-three Fabiano Caruana (Pssst - Don't miss their Speed Chess Match on August 24th!), but ultimately she only finished on 50%. Then only a few weeks ago, Hou Yifan showed extremely poorly in the Geneva Grand Prix, scoring only 2.5/9.

Today in Biel, she defeated IM Nico Georgiadis, completing a three-game winning streak and claiming sole first place with 6.5/9 and a 2810 performance rating. This is both one of Hou Yifan's finest successes and a notable victory in the history of women's chess.

After today, Hou Yifan has an 89 (!) point advantage over the second highest-rated female player in the world, GM Anna Muzychuk. However, overall, Hou Yifan is ranked only 72nd in the world. The disparity in participation between men and women in chess is such that in the history of chess, 35 women in total have been recognized as grandmasters (all still living) while there are nearly 1500 active male grandmasters.

Hou Yifan's next appearances are the aforementioned Speed Chess match vs Caruana and the World Cup next month where she is competing along with Magnus Carlsen and the entirety of the world's top 15 players in a massive 128-player knockout.
