  • ONTARIO HSCC 2018 - Final Survey - please reply by 31 October - one reponse / school

    Please email response to chris.field@bell.net

Many thanks to the 12 schools which have replied to the initial survey.
Your further reply to revised question 1 below will be appreciated.
To all other school teams: your discussion of the 4 questions
with members of your school chess club,
and your response - one response per school - before 31 October - will be very helpful.

Your response will not be committing you to attend, though of course we hope that you will.
The final results will be sent by email by 3 November, so that all may proceed with planning.

By the way, we still need a teacher, parent, or senior student to take over from Mr Lu, our Webmaster.

We also need a teacher or parent to take over from Mr Farley, our Treasurer.

    Revised question # 1:
We've had to move the April date, owing to an IB exam on April 27, and another tournament on Apr 28-29.
This involved asking the TSSCL to move their Team Championship, which they have graciously done.
The TSSCL Championship will be Tuesday, March 6, 2018.
This opens two possible dates for OHSCC 2018: April 6-7 or April 13-14.

Please discuss this with your chess club.
One reply from each school as soon as possible - before 31 October - will be very helpful.

Thank you very much for your help.

    Chris Field.

    1. Dates: A) Fri Apr 6 - Sat Apr 7 OR B) Fri Apr 13 - Sat Apr 14
    OR C) Fri May 11 - Sat May 12

Advantages for C: university hall and residence may be
available - less costly for all than hotels
Disadvantages for C: Grade 12s in IB and AP courses may not be
    able to play
    Advantages for A): over 4 weeks between TSSCL Teams (for Toronto area schools) and OHS ;
2 weeks between OHS and Chess'n Math Ontario Challenge (Apr 22)
Advantages for B): over 5 weeks between TSSCL and OHS
    Disadvantages for B): only 1 week between OHS and CMA Challenge ;
    possible term tests / assignments
    - Apr 13 final marks for term reports which affect university admission

    2. FIDE Rating: A) the Championship section should be FIDE-rated
OR B) only CFC rating for all sections

Advantages for A: the top section of most major tournaments is
FIDE-rated. This may attract top-ranked players.
Disadvantages for A: FIDE-rated tournaments cannot have more than
2 rounds / day --> we might have to return to a 3-day format.
--> if 2-day format is preferred, we could run Champ R1 the Thursday night,
then 2 rounds Friday and 2 rounds Saturday
(- we see the Champ section returning to 5 rounds.)

    3. Format: A) return to 3-day format used until 2014:
OR B) keep the 2-day format

    3-day schedule:
    Day 1 rounds: 1 pm; 6 pm
    Day 2: Champ (if FIDE-rated) 9 am , 1:30 pm ;
    Int & Beg 9 am , 1:30 pm , 6 pm
Champ (if not FIDE-rated) same as Int & Beg
Day 3: last round 9 am ; Awards 2 pm

Advantages for A: Awards ceremony much earlier.
    Easier start at 1 pm.
    Only one long 3-round day.
Disadvantages for A: Extra day of accommodation for out-of-town players.
    Extra meal costs for all.
Advantages for B: Only 1 school day and 1 Saturday.
Disadvantages for B: Two very long days with 3 rounds.
    Early start on day 1.
    Awards ceremony late and rushed.

    4. Schedule for 3-day format: A) Thursday - Friday - Saturday
    OR B) Friday - Saturday - Sunday

Advantages for A: Teachers have only 1 non-school day.
Those with a Sunday obligation are accommodated.
Disadvantages for A: Teachers need 2 days coverage (supply teacher).

NOTE: I understand that, for example, OFSAA track & field
    championships use an A-type format.
However, students compete in selective events.
