General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
By the same toiken, I assume that the ACA should pay the $100 and that the Banff Open would be under the ACA umbrella?
Or the GTCL, for Toronto events?
Or OCA?
I am not sure how popular this will be with individual organizers. Being charged for something that they used to be able to do for free.

What about updating the pre-registered list of an event? I often do this on Chesstalk for the FQE events, but the FQE never asked me to do so. For me, this is chess news, not chess ad.
Then in the future, after registering to any event organized by the FQE, Chesstalkers should go directly to the FQE website to check if they are in the pre-registered list. The FQE will not pay to make this information available elsewhere.
If there is no value in advertising on this site...why do you do it?
My job is to spread general chess information among the public. I decided to use this site because I believe I can reach more people this way. But you can understand that I will never take money from my own pocket to write here.
As I said before, the FQE never asked me to put advertisements on this site (or any other). Most of the time, the FQE does not even know that I leave messages here. Quite obviously, they will not pay for something they never ask me to do.
By the way, will you allow the posting of results or game scores during or after a FQE event? This is promotion too.

So are you speaking for Louis Morin or the FQE...sorry but I am a little confused...you realize of course that we are talking about $20 per event or $100 a year...and the FQE gets over $100,000 a year from the Quebec government to promote chess in the province...I realize for Louis $100 a year is a major decision, but for the FQE...really?!

I am the one who writes on Chesstalk, not the FQE. If you don't want me to write anymore, I won't. One thing is sure, I will not pay to contribute to your chess forum. Maybe I should be the one asking $100 a year.

Don't forget to mention ... TDs & Orgs should provide their services for free ... IM & GM tournament entrance free ... anything else? It's Christmas time ... go ahead.

How about ... free chess books?
I do not understand this post.
Except for Chess and Math Association, chess organization is not a lucrative business. Most organizers are happy when they barely manage to break even, and many know in advance that they will lose money in the process. This is why asking them to pay for "promoting their event on Chesstalk" is ludicrous.
By the way, IMs and GMs do get free entry in many tournaments, and GMs even get paid to play in opens... not only at Christmas time, but all year long.
And hundreds of free e-books are available online.

this whole thread reminds me of Cafe En Passent in Montreal back in the day. When I first moved to Montreal, the Cafe only charged for food & pinball. The chess players who filled the establishment paid nothing. Eventually the owner decided to charge for rental of sets and the right to play, presumably because the economics of running a commercial establishment on the basis of selling one sandwich to one chessplayer out of every 50 who walked throught the joint and played for hours wasn't very good. But lots of sturm und drang on that decision too. Why, I'll never play there again! It's outrageous! yada yada yada.
The reputation chess players have for being cheap seems well founded in fact.
Anyway, the economics of paying Larry $20/event or $100/year seems pretty simple. Does advertising on Chess Talk bring in one more entry? Yes/no? That entry will pay for the advertising. There might be some ambiguity about what constitutes a single organization for the purposes of the $100/year but people of good conscience can figure out the spirit of the rule. Not to mention that the budget for most of my events is from $4000-$12000 each so spending a lot of time worrying about $20 doesn't seem worthwhile.
As for the "free" advertising by the CFC on the website and also in the e-bulletin, my estimation of that is that it is questionable value - so much so that it's not worth my time to place the ad. I haven't read the bulletin in a while but those I have seen did not have many or any advertisements for events so I guess other tournament organizers agree with me on that.

So... what's the point of this post?
Neil was mocking people who disagree with Larry's decision to start charging a fee for tournament announcements...
Neil's premise is that chess should be a business (if I am wrong about this, please jump in here Neil...)
My personal opinion is that Larry is wasting his time with this and will not reap much money because (as Roger points out) chess players are cheap as cheap can be.
Chesstalk is a free service provided by CMA to promote Strategy Games sales etc. If it isn't doing that for the cost then CMA should shut it down. As often as I post here
and waste time reading nearly all of the posts, I would almost welcome that move since it would force me to stop wasting time here... :)
Re: Re : Re: A new policy for Chesstalk beginning Jan 1, 2018
I agree with many posters here.
A forum like chesstalk should be used as a "display" for the business behind it. All discussion boards on the web work like that.
You start charging for tournaments announcement? You're gonna lose posters. You start attacking people with malware like coinhive? You're gonna lose posters.
