General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I can't find pairings, standings, etc, in the lower sections. If they are on Chess Results they are well hidden. Unless it's just me being an idiot, as usual.

For some reason, chess results allows us to put in 3 sections only. Once we put the 4th section, it bumps the earlier one out.
From the Chess Results website: What to do when tournaments overwrite each other on chess-results.com?
If for example the upload from group B overrides group A, then the tournaments have the same database key.
What to do
•You can check the database key easy in Swiss-Manager. It can be found in the tournament dialog in sheet "other".
•If the database key is really the same, then change the database key for example in Group B to 0 and save the tournament.
•Upload the torunament to chess-results.com. Note: If the database key is 0 a new database-key is assigned from chess-results.com and saved in Swiss manager.

>>We are looking into it. Thanks for bringing this up.
A big congratulations to the "Elevate My Chess" team in running an excellent tournament:
- 185 players
- Big Hotel, great playing site, proximity to several food options, skittles spaces, water service, lounge spaces for parents and guests, lots of available free parking
- GO Train 200 metres away from playing site, for those who don't drive
- Rounds starting on-time. 5-10 minutes late on a couple of occasions that could not be avoided
- Two & Three days options, longer time controls for those who prefer it
- Proper advertising and coverage during the event. Photography, live games, etc...
- Many volunteers and staff on-site all the time
All of that while taking a chance at a different format of prizes distribution, fees structures, and combining 2 & 3 days options, which are not a common type of tournament in Canada. And... in a weekend tournament! And... as a first time organizers' team on such an ambitious project!
Thanks and Congrats to Gary Hua, Mikhail Egorov, Ken & family, all who ensured a very smooth tournament throughout. Kudos also to the arbiter Danny Goldenberg for making it all look easy. Well done.
I very much enjoyed playing in the Oakville Winter Open, and can only hope for more.

We received this fantastic feedback on Oakville open on Monday morning ( Feb 5, 2018 )
" Yesterday my son competed at the Oakville Winter Open. I just want to take a moment to thank the organizers for such a wonderful experience! I must say it was the best tournament we've been to. From the great venue with white linen tables, plenty of sitting for the parents and free parking on sight, to the attention to such details as bright t-shirts on organizers/volunteers with "I can help" written on them -awesome idea!
Really appreciated quick check-in and prize presentation right after my son was done with the last game (no need to wait for hours for everyone to finish!!). The pairings were posted in several places, so people didn't have to fight each other to access them :) very orderly, just the way it has to be. Last but not least, Elevate My Chess provided healthy lunch options as oppose to the regular pizza. It was beautifully presented and delicious!
I can say a lot of work and effort went into organizing this event and it really did stand out from the other ones.
I would definitely recommend tournaments by Elevate My Chess to other players/chess parents.
Keep up the great work and looking forward to the next tournament!"
From one of the parent.
If you wish to provide feedback to our Oakville open, please send your comments to info@elevatemychess.com
We are very encouraged by the above feedback and there many positive feedback from parents and players.
We will definitely have our second tournament.
Stay tuned for our summary of the tournament and the results.
Results has been sent for CFC and FIDE rating updates. CFC latest rating will include this tournament ( I hope so ) and FIDE next update ( Mar 1, 2018 ) should reflect this tournament result.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for your kind words. It was definitely a lot of hard work and lots of preparation was done to ensure the success. Having said that, IA Danny Goldenberg and Mikhail Egorov made a lot of difference in making the tournament a huge success. Thanks so much to both of them in the operation of the 2.5 days event.
