General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
But how easy is it to get there from the new subway station in Vaughan?
The trip can be planned at https://tripplanner.yrt.ca/hiwire
The starting point: 7202 - VAUGHAN METROPOLITAN CENTRE, MILLWAY AVE, VAUGHAN
End: 89 INDUSTRIAL PKWAY N, AURORA (tournament location)
It might take more than 1 hour on buses from the subway station. The trip would be across Highway 7 to Yonge (Viva Orange bus), then north to Aurora (Viva Blue), and a final 33A or 54 YRT bus. Then 0.5 km walk. The cost is $4 or less with Presto card.

One more possibility to use subway - the new TTC subway Downsview Park station is closely connected to the GO train Downsview Park station. However, it might work only going home to Toronto as there are no early Northbound trains.
Play-up fee – 30 CAD – a player can enter the higher Section if his/her rating is less than 100 points lower than the Section floor limit.
To me, this seems NOT normal.
The condition usually is that one can play up if "within 100 points of the section above floor limit". Can other organizers confirm whether I am right, that this is the normal template?
Under Aurora' term of "less than 100 points lower", it means, as far as I can see:
Two players in the 1500's want to play up at Aurora in the U 1600 section.
Player X is rated 1501 - he is allowed to play up (Less than 100 points below 1600).
Player Y is rated 1500 - he is NOT allowed to play up (NOT LESS THAN 100 points below 1600 - he is dead on 100 points lower, and so does not qualify).
Am I right on this Egis?? Is this what was intended?
What do others think? Is my interpretation correct?

Organizer doesn't understand what "open section" means. Open section must be open to all. Probably he is not clever enough.

Seems that you want to play too much in our Open section. Your post is dated: "Today, 04:55" Does it really bother so much that you even can not sleep? LOL
Re: 2018 Aurora Spring Open - details - March 24-25
There were several more entries and some cancellations. Refunds for cancellations are issued by Bernie immediately. Those who entered will receive confirmation from Chris after he'll come back from the trip. Then I'll update the website. 1.5 month till tournament.
Maybe you've noticed - we don't plan to have Summer Open this year (unless you'll try to convince us to do it :) However, I might organize a small-scale one-day event in June. Details probably will be posted elsewhere.

Egis, can you define OPEN Section in your our understanding. You are a National Master and maybe you don't also understand your title? If you don't know then we can conclude that "You cannot teach an old dog new tricks".

Image an open box something like this |_| . Now you shall have no problems with the section of the chess tournament with the bottom limit (2000) and without the ceiling limit - the OPEN section.
We might switch the section name and composition to MASTER(s) section with players having "master" titles in future. Valid titles would be like grandMASTER, FIDE (national) (candidate) MASTER. What are old dogs' thoughts? :)

Image the box you were thinking and cut and lay flat in the floor. No lower limit (2000) and no upper limit. That is the meaning of "OPEN". You're really an old dog, Egis! Do you have to wait when one day someone (maybe one of your students) will ask you to define what is the meaning of "OPEN"?
What are old dogs' thoughts?
Old dogs thoughts will FINALLY say "Egis LEARNED a NEW TRICK"!
