General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I know, it has been a long time coming! We were hoping to get the upgrade done for the beginning of November 2017...we missed the Xmas season unfortunately...but as they say...better late than never!

ChessTalk is paid for by Strategy Games which belongs to the Chess'n Math Association.

2cnts: some pictures of the books are from XIX century; some books lack pictures; generation of the second page is quite slow; don't see bargain and/or used books sections :)
I noticed the fuzzy pics...we have to look into that for sure...thanks for your feedback! Slow generation of 2nd page...will have to be investigated...much appreciated...missing photos will take some time...but hopefully we will be at 100% by the next holiday season lol
Hi Larry
Not sure what to make of the new site
I used the following search terms
-Avrukh: nothing(expecting to see his latest book vol 2A white repertoire)
-Axel Smith: got nothing(expecting to see e3 Poison)
-Quality Chess: got nothing(expecting to see lots of books)
-Tiger's Modern: got the old first edition but not the new 2014 edition
-I see lots of older titles but nothing new
Overall I was expecting to see new titles listed first so I would not have to go through each category. Maybe I missed something but the site does not seem too useful for chess books, especially the new titles which are coming out very fast from New in Chess, Quality Chess, Chess Evolution and Thinkers Publishing etc.
I assume you are still living in Budapest...maybe the titles you mention have not crossed the ocean yet...I will certainly look into what you have pointed out and I will check with our U.S. distributors. I will post an update here in the next 10 days.
Hi Larry, most common reason could be because the image size and image format.
When raster formats (.jpg, .gif, etc..) are being enlarged (a.k.a. scaled up) a 'fuzziness' will occur. For example when a 50px x 50px .jpg is enlarged to fill an area of 300px x 300px. This is because the pixel information in a given format and color gamut is being 'stretched'.
Best practice is to scale down a raster image ... and also to use a .png format to help keep file size down thereby keep page load time brief as possible.
Hi Larry yes still here in Budapest.
Some suggestions
-visitors should have a choice of how many items get displayed per page(now set a 12) as it is quite tedious to go through
-need pdf excerpts when possible(this seems normal at NIC etc)
-need easy search by publisher and author
-new items should a separate category. Items coming soon also useful
-best sellers list is interesting
NIC sends me an email when there is something new maybe you already do this
There is a nice new book on The Pirc Defence-Marin(Quality Chess) which i liked a lot. but I like books in general :)
I like the white king while waiting for the page to load.
I like the pretty book covers.The titles have enough room for at least author (if not publisher and year).
Six product categories is excellent. I didn't find sub categories on the left at first. Would be nice to see them when mouse hovers over a category.
Chess Materials - Trophy should be trophies or prizes. When I do search the subcategories don't come up. Did a search for authors, publisher, country with poor results.
Searching for the French worked. Some books need to have tags added to them that aren't in the title. e.g. problems. The Chess Attacker's Handbook, winning chess puzzles, or Checkmate Universe doesn't come up when searching for tactics. No books for girls, teacher or trainer (e.g. Manual Step 4)
One computer and Software, or is it computers or hardware or electronics or digital.
Too much space between the top to book name to shopping cart to book cover, could easily click on wrong item below.
A list puts CD volume 1 on a different page than volume 2, they should be together.
Sometimes I would just want a text list, can't I click on text only option. It was difficult to go through 91 books on the Sicilian.
Interesting sort (and the number of books not available on screens which show subcategories), but can't it be more visible, like the top line or at the top of of the side. I don't know what a subcategory is.
I don't like seeing English by a book title that is obvious English. No services in Chinese or Russian?
Is there an online consultant available "Ask an Expert", especial for parents/grandparents of chess kids.
How many CMA teachers do you have? I would love for all of them to go over the list and mark their favourites, then when a book description comes up it can say recommended by 25 teachers. Harder to have a nice one sentence comment.
And it's too bad that search engines won't go deeper than your dead first page. Should have a newsy first page with new material every week: what;s hot, what kids are excited about, congrats to latest tourney winner
