        U.S. Championships 2018

        April 18, 2018

        Round One

Jennifer Shahade, Yasser Seirawan and Maurice Ashley are doing the honors as commentators.

Mike Klein at chess.com - "There's another subplot to the event: qualification for the Olympiad team, which will be trying to defend its gold medal in Batumi, Georgia in September. Traditionally the winner of the U.S. championship in an Olympiad year earns an automatic spot. If one of the big three wins, that will be a moot point since he would qualify by rating anyway."

                U.S. Championships 2018

                April 18, 2018

                Round Two

The first game to finish. At the post-mortem, Fabi said that he was reading the New In Chess Yearbook in bed a few nights ago and it discussed 9.h4 at the end of the article as an option. It was played in a correspondence game so not a bad move and he thought his opponent today had not analyzed it.

                  - Nakamura can't break Zherebukh's solid Petroff, and is now finding himself at "only" 50% after two rounds. With his close rivals scoring important victories, the gap between him and the leaders could increase very fast

                  - Caruana in the confession booth: "I don't know what happened...After just a few moves Alex has wandered into a very difficult position...will see what he will come up with"

                  - Why is Kamsky not playing? At least he would be stronger opposition to the fab three

                  - Another endgame lesson from GM Wesley So

Alex Lenderman got confused with his queen duties, grabbed a pawn and succumbed to a miniature queen hunt against Fab Fabi.
