Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
After round 9 Sam Shankland leads with Fab Fabi Caruana a half point behind and Wesley So a point behind. Those are the only players who have a realistic chance of catching Sam.
In the womens Annie Wang has run away with the tournament. Apparently Annie is an amazing defender and has taken advantage of her opponents mistakes with 6 wins, 3 draws, and no losses.
Sam Shankland won and has the fate of the championship in his own hands. Hopefully he wins in the last round and avoids a playoff with Fab Fabi Caruana. Fab Fabi won a nice game against Zherebukh to leave himself in contention a half point back.
Wesley So comes in to talk. He seemed fairly happy. His plans are to spend fifty days in Europe with Norway Chess, Paris/Leuven and rapids in Spain - approximately 70 games.
Yasser still cannot get over a shock move in the Caro-Kann that Awonder played and he asks Wesley if he has ever seen it before:

Wesley affirms that he has seen it before. He says that if you have a very strong engine and you let it run for an hour, it will come up with e5 as the best move here!
Hikaru Nakamura found his form near the end. He said that he came in rather rusty after a long layoff. He had good things to say about Annie Wang's future. He will be at Norway Chess, Leuven/Paris and then back to St. Louis.
There is an amusing moment when Anna Zatonskih goes into the confessional booth to talk about her game. When she is finished, she tries to exit and finds that the door is stuck! Next confession - "I am trapped in the confessional booth"! Jennifer Shahade jumps up to help her but a member of the production staff lets her out first.
- Shankland looks like he's going to win his game and claim the title
- Funny if Caruana wins the world title but can't win the US title
- That seems a bit premature..
Tim Harding - "Congratulations to Sam Shankland on a brilliant +6 to become US champion ahead of Caruana at +5
Caruana said in his interview that he thought +4 would be good enough for a tie. Even after losing in round 4, he still felt confident that he could win the event and he hadn't expected that the loss would be so costly."
Tim Harding - Paikidze offered a draw as soon as she saw the Wang result and Goletiani (who was slightly better but low on time) accepted. So tiebreak tomorrow.
With Wang and Paikidze tying for first place, there will be a playoff tomorrow, April 30. Two rapid games in the playoff, G/25 +5 delay. If undecided..
Armageddon:
- Pieces determined by drawing of lots,
- White starts w/5 mins. +2 increment,
- Black starts w/4 mins. + 2 increment,
- Black declared the winner in a draw.
Sam Shankland had a fantastic result (including a key last round win) 6 wins and 5 draws for clear first and 2018 US Champion! He is now the newest member of the 2700 club of ratings, 44th in the world!
Fab Fabi Caruana had a result that would normally win the US Championship and won in the last round but couldnt catch Sam Shankland finsihing a half point back.
Annie Wang had a marvelous tournament and had no problems handling the field until the last round when she allowed a better position to turn on her and eventually lost.
This means a playoff for first place which will be decided today.
The consensus was that Black should have played 14..dxe3 e.p.
After that, everyone seemed to get behind Annie and cheered her on:
Comments from kibitzers:
- 26.Be7 would win on the spot
- Be7 is a Carlsen move
- Still an easy win if Annie plays with reasonable care. She didn't need to find Be7 to win
- Have the commentators lost it
- Everything loses for black
- Nice play annie
- She has found many more best moves than she has missed
- 0-0-0 is completely ridiculous
- Annie escaped a horrible position with some help from Nazi
- I wouldn't have even looked at 0-0-0 for White
- What a game!
