New in Chess published a very good endgame book last year. Written by Jesus de la Villa, a Spanish GM, it is called "100 Endgames You Must Know".

I think the author does an excellent job of explaining the concepts and avoiding rule memorization as the primary method of instruction.

There is a basic test near the start of the book. It consists of 26 positions. I have chosen a representative sample. As they are basic positions, you need to know them cold. Do you?

Position 1 - White to move. Is it a draw?

Position 2 - Black to move. Is it a draw?

Position 3 - Black to move. Is it a draw?

Position 4 - White to move. What should you play and with which result?

Position 5 - White to move? Is it worth playing on?

The book is available from CMA and, for what it is worth, I think it does a great job of choosing and explaining crucial endgames.
