  • RA Fall Open: already 35 registered

We are pleased to report that the discounts for early registration/payment seem to be catching on. With still over a month and a half to go, we already have 35 players. Please note that as we are now in August, the early discount is now $15, where your mailed payment is postmarked by August 31st. If you would prefer to pay in person in August, I expect to be at the RA club on the Thursday evenings of August 6th and 13th (or use mail later in August).

    --------- original event announcement ---------

The Eastern Ontario Chess Association (EOCA) organizes the EOCA Grand Prix, a series of weekend tournaments over the 2009-2010 chess season.

The next EOCA event in Ottawa will be the RA Fall Open, on September 25th-27th. It will consist of 5 rounds, with flexible bye and Amateur options.

We have multiple sections, and class prizes for every 200 rating points from 2200 to 1400. Every player will be submitted for both CFC and FIDE rating.

Please note we are offering significant early bird discounts! The earlier you register and pay, the more money you save! This also applies to players with FIDE titles, who may also save money with their FIDE title. Please check out the specific discount amounts and cutoff dates in the event announcement.

For more details on this event, and a great webpage for all of the events in the 2009-2010 EOCA Grand Prix, please consider bookmarking this weblink:

Aris, as you are mentioning that tournaments will be rated CFC and FIDE, thus you may include both ratings in the listings.

What do you use to get the listing? Maybe it is possible to generate links to CFC and FIDE ID cards of players.

      Hi Aris:

Simple question - when you rate both FIDE and CFC, for pairing purposes do you use the higher of the FIDE and CFC ratings?

LOL, I just use a spreadsheet that I built using the free Open Office software suite! ;)

When people register, I use their current CFC rating, and then on the morning of the first round, I recheck their CFC rating, and crosscheck it against FIDE ratings, and sometimes FQE ratings, etc. Would you like to build something more automatic for us?

Yes, and sometimes the FQE rating (if it is higher) for players from Quebec, etc.

Would you agree with this approach?

            Hi Aris:

Seems the most reasonable approach to me as a non-organizer.

Seems like you may have hit something with your early, early bird discounts. Good luck on the tournament.

I don't know how to retrieve automatically FIDE or CFC rating, but generate a link with OO you can try with this code:

              FIDE
              CFC
You must Quote my message to get what is meaningful between [ code ] -
copy and paste into your spreadsheet.
At B2 and C2 should be player's FIDE and CFC #

Then just copy and paste back here :)

Thanks for your good wishes. Ideally, I would like to exceed our last prize fund ($2000) while increasing the number of players, thus resulting in more smaller sections, which results in more close enjoyable games. I didn't think that so many people would take advantage of the $20 discount, but this many players early might hopefully really jack up the number of players who register in August and September after having seen the higher than normal (for Ottawa) initial interest. Let's re-evaluate again in a few weeks!

OK, thanks, but to be honest, I don't know when I'll get the chance to experiment with these ideas. In any case, do registered players really care about EXACT ratings before the tournament pairings actually start? I would rather spend the time job-searching! ;)

Technically, if a section is FIDE rated, FIDE rules (and ratings) take precedence.

In practice I don't think anyone complains about what rating you use for pairings, but you never know...
