  • Quebec Open - game from round 6

Here is a game from round 6 of the Quebec Open - not your ordinary GM draw...

    [Event "Quebec op"]
    [Site "Longueuil CAN"]
    [Date "2018.07.25"]
    [Round "6.2"]
    [White "Lesiege, Alexandre"]
    [Black "Edouard, Romain"]
    [Result "1/2-1/2"]
    [ECO "D20"]
    [WhiteElo "2517"]
    [BlackElo "2638"]
    [PlyCount "20"]
    [EventDate "2018.07.21"]
    [EventType "swiss"]
    [EventRounds "9"]
    [EventCountry "CAN"]

    1. d4 d5 2. c4 dxc4 3. e4 Nf6 4. e5 Nd5 5. Bxc4 Nb6 6. Bb3 Nc6 7. Nf3 Bg4 8.
    Ng5 Bxd1 9. Bxf7+ Kd7 10. Be6+ Ke8 1/2-1/2

This identical game (plus or minus one or two checks) appears exactly 235 times in my database of almost 7 million games - all since 1985. (and one game was agreed drawn before Bxd1). In my database - several players have played it multiple times - and some have played it both as White and as Black.

The alternative 8. Bxf7+ appears 35 times drawing about 50% of the time, and White and Black splitting the wins fairly evenly.

After the game I "booed" at Alex in the hallway for this GM draw.

He laughed, and said that he and Romain are GMs, so they are allowed a GM draw. :)
