  • Danzhou Super Tournament

We as chess fans are so spoiled (big happy grin). Not only is Biel going on but the Danzhou super tournament just started. So what? Well let me tell you what. What a field! Eight great fighters!
Wei Yi, Vidit, Sam Shankland (yes Sam Shankland!), Le Quang Liem (my old favorite - Mr. Class), Bu, Yu Yangyi, (performing at home no less), Fedoseev, and the young star Duda. In the first round only one win but not from lack of trying. Sam Shankland saved himself with a fortress, and lots of sparring in other games. Duda won with a French and amazing strategy and tactics! A knight sack that would rock you out of your chair (for two connected passed pawns) and then the longest king walk Ive seen in a while, and finally decided with a magnificent pawn race (that had to be calculated accurately)

Rd 3 Blood on the waters. All the games should have been decisive. Lucky save by Fedoseev. Beautiful exploitation of two bishops over two knights in a closed position by Vidit. Wei Yi stumbled.

Sam Shankland might not think his tournament was successful with a minus score and losing 5 rating points but he proved that he can swim with the 2750 sharks and he is still above 2720. Keep up the great chess Sam!

                              Danzhou Super Tournament

                              August 4, 2018

Scoring 4½/7, tournament's top seed, GM Yu Yangyi bagged the title prize of the 9th Hainan Danzhou Super Grandmaster tournament. In the final round, the race for the title was between Yu Yangyi and his countryman Bu Xiangzhi. Going for a comfortable draw in the Petroff, Yu put the onus of catching up on his rival who was half-a-point behind. Bu was never really in a position to win his game but Fedoseev, Bu's opponent, surprisingly pulled out a win at the last moment to score his first win of the event. Le Quang Liem and Wei Yi also scored impressive wins in the finale.

                              _________

In what was a tense and hard-fought Danzhou Super GM Tournament, Chinese grandmaster Yu Yangyi ended up winning the $24,000 first prize. Sam Shankland's undefeated streak came to an end.

Vidit didn't play an important role in this tournament, and in fact finished in last place. However, his only win was against Shankland, so American fans will wonder: Did he really need to do that?

The reason is that, with this game, Shankland's undefeated streak of 62 games came to an end: Biel Master Open 2017 (1), US Masters Championship (9), Sunway Sitges open (9), St Louis Spring tournament (9), U.S. championship (11), Capablanca memorial (10), American continental (11) and Hainan Danzhou Super GM (2).
