David Howell is the first to score of the leaders in round 3. He may well be the only perfect score in the field after this round. Many interesting games to watch.

Nasty tactic by Mickey Adams (pawn tickler) nets him a full point from a worse position. Nice!

Amazing result for Mickey. I was watching it live, thinking it had all gone wrong and that after 45 Qd6+ he would soon lose. I better play that out now. Thanks!

Gawain Jones with a nice pressure win takes first with the only perfect score - 4-0 - so far.

            • Colossal late blunder in Jones - Hawkins - from [0.00] to [6.50] in a move #39. Black had 1' 30" for two moves, one of which could be a 'free' check (39...Qa1+) provided the forced 40...Qg7 followed. Alas, 39...Qe1+ was played - fatally

                Round Six

The two commentators on chess24.com are Karsten Muller and Michael Rahal. The former is a German GM and author of Fundamental Chess Endings with Frank Lamprecht and Bobby Fischer (The Career and Complete Games). Rahal is a Spanish IM and a FIDE Trainer.

If you are commentating, you probably should be fluent in a couple of languages. Michael’'s webpage says this, “"My name is Michael Rahal and I am a professional trilingual chess coach - English, Spanish and Catalan. I also speak some French (bonjour! and exactly fifteen Russian words (privyet, kak dyela?)"”

At one point the expression “"ersatz läufer"” was used, throwing the chat room into confusion. I think it means replacement bishop.

Yesterday Koby had Black, was outgraded by 125 points and yet took his opponent to school with a masterclass on how to play against 1. b4.

See the above link because there was some discussion that White had lots of time at the end but played quickly because he was tired!

“Gelfand noted that inability to concentrate manifests as unusually fast play in some people and unusually slow play in others. I'm definitely in group one, maybe Joe is too.”

                  Round Seven

The commentators today are Oliver Reeh and Michael Rahal, broadcasting from Hamburg.

Oliver Reeh (born January 19, 1964) is a German chess player , translator and journalist specializing in chess and computer chess. For many years he has been working as a translator for the Hamburg-based company ChessBase.

It very much looks, with two rounds to go, that either Adams or Howell will be champion at the end.

                  • David Howell has yet to play Luke McShane. So you'd have to make Adams hot favourite now. But who knows, one slip up and there's a pack of players who could catch him.

                      Now the backstory (slightly edited):

"“The "Match of the Day" had some excitement round about move 12. I wandered out to buy a cup of tea, had a sip of it and put it on my score sheet, next to the clock (so clearly in my space). The idiot to my right (who was right-handed) somehow knocked it over so it went over his board and his leg. He and his opponent looked blankly at each other, so I found an arbiter, who came over with an assistant and 500 m of paper towels, and paused the clock on the wet board. They proceeded to mop up the tea. Roger was thinking and I went over and suggested he pause the clock whilst the clean-up was in progress. The arbiter then said the same thing. So Roger and I smiled and went for separate walks for a few minutes. Eventually we resumed, and I had to buy myself another cup of tea, which I placed on the left of the board...

My travels in Hull have been useful, finding some family history, but finding also oddities. There's a lovely notice near the venue, which says (roughly), "Don't drop your chewing gum, it sticks to rats' feet and makes it easier for them to enter your house and bite you."”"

Should be an exciting finish to the British Championships. Too close to call. Interesting commentary about Mickey Adams and his thirty year streak. Hope he keeps it going for another thirty years!

                            The British Championship 2018

                            August 4, 2018

From Leonard Barden’'s column in The Guardian:

“The British championship at Hull has become a battle of the generations between England’'s veteran No 1, Michael Adams, 46, and his ambitious rivals Gawain Jones, 30, and David Howell, 27.

The wily and phlegmatic Cornishman, who once reached a world championship final, has often been in the global top 20. Adams is nicknamed “"The Spider”" for his deep and intricate strategical patterns which bemuse opponents.

He has not lost a single game in the British championship since Blackpool 1988, a 30-year streak, although he has missed many years due to international commitments. His record score of 10/11 at Bournemouth 2016 will never be broken, because the championship has been reduced from 11 rounds to nine.

Jones and Howell are regulars in strong international opens. Both are former British champions, so besides the £10,000 first prize their target is to win clearly ahead of Adams, who has dropped back in the world rankings during the past year.”

By far the strongest British Championship. I wish and hope one day Julian will come back and play even just one more time: https://www.ichess.net/blog/gm-julia...mpionship-win/
