  • Summary of 2018 Canadian Junior Chess Championship - Aug 8-12, 2018

After 5 days of battle, CJCC came to an end on Aug 12, 2018 with Quebec player FM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux emerged as the new Canadian Champion and BC Sherry Tian became the top Girl in the Invitational section. They will be the official players representing Canada at WJCC in Turkey next month.

I would like to thank firstly CFC for granting us ( MIkhail Egorov and myself ) the right to host this tournament, IA Danny Goldenberg for being the Arbiter, CFC John Upper for doing the write up of the tournament and photos, the parents for bringing their kids to come and participate and all the players making this year edition a very successful event. Please find the summary for those who were not there.

    Summary :

    1. The tournament was held at Humber college and the location was very strategic with lots of parking ( Saturday and Sunday parking was free ) and lots of nearby restaurants. Venue itself was excellent with the spacious hall and good lightings. We will definitely try to do it here again next year.

    2. We have almost 150 players this year as compared to about 100 players in last year edition which was held in Mississauga. We aim to achieve 200 players next year.

    3. We have 4 sections this year as compared to 2 sections last year. All rounds started on time even for round 1 for all sections. I think this is a record for any tournament thanks to IA Danny Goldenberg.

    4. We have players from BC/QC and players all over Ontario participating this year and we also have players from Guyana ( 2 ) playing in the lower sections. As mentioned above the top players ( boy and girl ) comes from QC and BC. This showed how strong is the Invitational section.

    5. The down side of the tournament was less players in the Open section ( 25 players ).

    6. Feedback from parents are all positive except for some request to make it an even better tournament next year ad we definitely will consider these requests. We hope to hear more from the parents and players alike. Let us know what we can do better for all of you.

    7. Invitational section games are mostly on live ( 3 out of 5 ) and was on Chess talk with almost 1800 views. We aim to have 5 DGT boards next time around.

    8. Results on the link below and with photos from John Upper. Thank you John.

    9. All the results will be updated on CFC tomorrow hopefully as we have submitted to CFC at the end of the tournament.

    10. We hope to win the bid for 2019 and make it an even better event.

Thanks to All who have participated as without your participation, this event will not be a success.

    Cheers for Chess in Canada

Thanks to Gary and Mikhail for running the event -- and letting me take pix during the last round and playoffs -- and to IA Danny G. for making sure it ran by the book. It also helped me get pix that they went out of their way to tell me when they were going to present the trophies (a process spread out over several hours, since each section had its winners determined only after its final games finished).

Two particularly nice thing abut the Humber College site were that the tables were narrow (so no leaning and reaching for the smaller players) and that EVERY chair had a padded seat, wheels, and a reclining back: comfy and quiet when the kids pushed their chairs back to go walkies.

IMO, only thing that was less than excellent was that several of the top-rated Canadian Juniors declined to participate --- a problem (if that's what it is) that is not in any organizers' ability to control.

PS: Gary, the link to the facebook page with the pix is correctly displayed, but actually takes browsers to the chess-results page.
