  • Can a double round robin schedule be fixed when the tournament has already started?

A friend who plays in a sporting league (not chess) has a kind of double round robin schedule for the season.

Actually, it's a double round robin played twice. The 8 teams play each other 4 times - twice at home and twice away. Kinda like playing with the White and Black pieces.

The problem comes in where there are 3 home games in a row - or 3 away games in a row - and this happens twice in the schedule.

My friend says that his team may lose their sponsorship over this.

Anyway, I am sending him a sample 8 player double round robin schedule. The league could copy this - except they have already played one round.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Use normal Berger tables but reverse the last two rounds of each cycle to avoid the three-in-a-row effect. If only one round has taken place so far, renumber the teams based on the first round Berger pairings and go from there.
