  • Winter Chess Classic St Louis

The Winter Chess Classic is on in St Louis. In the A section first round Jeffery Xiong won his first game and is now number 5 US player ahead of Ray Robson. In the B section Joel Benjamin is playing. Interesting.

Jeffery Xiong wins again in a wild tactical fight and leads with 2-0.

Jeffery Xiong leads in Group A with 3 out of 4. His last two games have been hard fought draws.

Joel Benjamin won his first game in Group B. Nice endgame. I really liked the way he handled the two bishops in round 2 but it wasnt enough to win.

Lucas Vanforeest looked to be running away with the B section until he was stopped stone cold by Nikolas Theodorescu in a minature with a queen sack.

Joel Benjamin meets Timur Gareev in this tournament round. I like the position from both sides. Wait. How can that be?

An entertaining game (Benjamin vs Gareev). Timur Gareev at the end had better board vision and won do to an interesting oversight/tactic.

In the A section Quesada's knight play was particularly impressive against Jeffery Xiong and he ended up controlling the board. Quesada also controls first with a one and a half point lead with two rounds to go.

Joel Benjamin won his second game against Lucas Van Foreest, a nice scalp, and ended up with a reasonable performance in the middle of the pack.
