Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links

12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

Hi Mei,
Your tournament looks promising with over 50% of preregistered participants above the rating of 1900. There will definitely be exciting and competitive games. But wait, are we supposed to be preparing some scary or "dug from the grave" chess openings variations like the Fried Liver, Orangutan or the timely Halloween Gambit?

A friendly reminder for those potential participants who have planned, not yet registered and wanted to avail of the significant discount of $15 (advance registration) or $35 (at the door) for the CHESSCA Chess Tournament that the deadline will be on Thursday, October 15.
Entry Fee: $65 by October 15th, $80 after October 15th, $100 at the door.

Just a friendly reminder that today is the last day to qualify for the early bird rate to the 2009 Chessca Open. Registrations received up to midnight will be accepted at a discounted rate of $65.
All other registrations received after October 15th will be charged the regular fee of $80. Walk-in entries accepted at $100.

2009 Chessca Open: The Signature Elora Mill Sunday Brunch Buffet
Hello all,
Greetings of good eatings I bring! This year the Elora Mill Inn will be serving their Signature Sunday Brunch Buffet on the weekend of 2009 Chessca Open. Yum!
In partnership with the award winning H2O restaurant*, the Elora Mill has agreed to offer all players, parents and visitors their signature brunch buffet at a discounted rate of $15.95**. A sample*** of the menu is provided below.
The brunch buffet begins on Sunday at 11.30 am and ends at 2 pm. This should give all players ample time to rest, relax, mingle and enjoy some local fall goodies!

Thank you for a wonderful tournament. This was some of the best fun I've had at a weekend swiss in a long time.
Some of the memorable events for me were:
The walking tour, where two funny guys in period clothing told us about the history of Elora .... and made a lot of jokes about alcohol. (It should be noted that for some reason this long walk right after the FREE meal gave me a lot of energy for my chess game ;) )
The Rocky Horror Picture show, where some chess players embarrassed themselves by dancing in a movie theatre filled with Elora residents in Halloween costumes while being pelted with rice and toast. (We'll something like that occurred).
And as for my chess games? Well I said I would talk about the memorable events..
Anyways, thanks again for a really great chess experience Mei, Well done!

have you thought of having sections in the tournament?
I played two 1200s, a 2300 and a 1900 - kind of all over the map, even the CFC ratings calculator did not correctly predict my resulting rating nor did my manual calculation

In reply to your post the simple answer is Yes. In fact, the last two Chessca tournaments were Sectionals.
Due to Niagara Falls being the only other Open event in the SWOCL calendar, I decided to offer an Open format at Chessca this year. The intention was to provide players the opportunity to play across varying levels of strengths.
I know that there are many good things for both types of formats, and will take your feedback on the Open event into consideration when deciding on the format for the next Chessca tournament. Thanks for the feedback and best wishes for your games in Guelph this weekend.
