  • Hamilton Summer Open: Day 1

On day 1 the pieces were flying in Hamilton. Some of the excitement included Constantine Khayutin's draw with Doug Bailey and Lee Hendon's upset victory over Daniel Abrahams.

Of course some things in life remain boringly predictable, such as, Artiom Samsonkin's sole possession of first place with 3/3.

There is still day 2 however. And Artiom will likely face Hamilton's city champion, Doug Bailey, in round 4. But until that time we have plenty of chess data to look at by visiting the following link (There you will find the current standings and tentative pairings for round 4):

Hamilton Summer Open 2009 - mini report

The 3rd Hamilton Summer Open was a big success. A big thank you to all that participated. A total of 65 players this year, up from 37 last summer. We added a junior section this year which attracted 23 budding GM's.

    Winners were:

    Open
    1st - Artiom Samsonkin 5/5 $ 438
    2nd-3rd - Doug Bailey, Michael Dougherty, John Upper 3.5/5 $ 140 each

    Under 1900
    1st-2nd - Jaime Solis, Joe Bellomo 4/5 $ 222 each
    3rd - Ferdinand Supsup, Doug Gillis 3.5/5 $ 60 each

    Juniors

There were some exciting playoffs for the trophies. I will need to get the details from Garvin.

Congratulations to all the winners. Total cash prize fund = $ 1,422

The complete tournament report will be on the Hamilton and SWOCL sites in a few days. We have some pictures and a few selected games to add.

A big thanks to TD Garvin Nunes who did most of the heavy lifting and missed the post tournament festivities at the Mandarin due to exhaustion. And thanks to the cleanup crew.

If you have an interesting game you would like included, please email it to me (in chessbase file if possible) at robertgillanders@rogers.com
