  • Canbase updates coming soon....any more games?

I will be updating Canbase (database of Canadian games) soon. If you have any games (recent or not; PGN's or scanned/photographed scoresheets) send them to me for inclusion. I have recently received a collection of scoresheets from Toronto including the Oakville Winter Open and the Ontario Junior - these should be included in the update. Contact me if you have scoresheets you would like to mail to me, or they can be left at one of the Strategy stores for pickup by Larry.

Hugh, the amount of work involved seems staggering to me.

If you get a written game score in English descriptive, what is the process for putting it in Canbase?

Do you have to enter the moves in individually in descriptive and have some program for changing to algebraic or is there some magic scan that can do everything?

I am fluently multilingual in all chess notations (including the odd game in Spanish descriptive) - as is my assistant (Luc Gauthier). Chessbase automatically displays the moves in algebraic as they are entered on the screen (although CB can display the moves in (English) descriptive). The only problems we have is handwriting - so with scoresheets from both players, that problem is usually solved. (but the "Elevate My Chess Canada" scoreheets have very little space for writing moves - making them harder to read. Perhaps they could eliminate the "Notes" section at the bottom, and/or remove some white space at the top to allow for larger writing in the moves fields).

I should mention that I don't generally include active/blitz games unless there is some means (e.g. DGT boards) for recording all the games of such an event - nor computer, postal, simul, and "friendly" games.

Looking at the tournament list of 2018 Aurora Fall Open games are missing:

        Master - http://www.aucc.club/wordpress/wp-co...afallopenc.pgn
        U2000 - http://www.aucc.club/wordpress/wp-co...lopen2000c.pgn

As I recall several games are missing and some are not complete.

For older years I need to look for games at the computer. Though, the links have been posted on chesstalks.

I probably did not receive the Aurora Fall Open games until after my last update (January 1). I have them all in my database, and they will be added during my next update around April 1.

Checking again - i had never copied over the updated list of 2018 event included in Canbase, and the Aurora Fall Open games are (and were since Jan. 1) there. I have copied over the updated file.

Mark Ginsburg just posted on FB. 'Chess history bulletin: I unearthed a previously unpublished game with GM Samuel Reshevsky - Quebec 1980'. It was his last round game vs Reshevsky. He says he lost a won position after several consecutive draw offers. I am sure it would be interesting as well as historical.
