  • Telegraph matches...

Stephen Wright's most recent issue of the "BCCF Bulletin" features a report on a telegraph match between teams from Vancouver and Winnipeg in 1924. I am wondering who would have paid for such a match. Sending/receiving telegraph messages wasn't free, and there were over 800 messages sent during this match over a period of several hours. Equipment was set up at the Winnipeg CC and the Hotel Vancouver. Three games had to be adjudicated (probably due to their length).

Since Winnipeg had some players from the CNR CC - perhaps CN provided the telegraph facilities and absorbed the costs? (1924 rates between two US cities about the same distance apart as Vancouver and Winnipeg was about $1 for 15 words).

The 1870s matches between cities in Ontario were free (publicity for the new service) as they were after business hours.
