    Draws for $10 Gift Certificates:

    1. Shortly before the beginning of both Round 1 & Round 2, I will be doing a draw for one $10 Gift Certificate for Matty O'Shea's Pub and Restaurant, located at 12 Chambers Street, in Smiths Falls. They are an Irish-style pub with a patio, serve lunch and dinner, are open 6 days a week, including Saturdays 11:30am to Midnight (closed Sundays). All players playing in the given round will be eligible for the draw.

    2. Shortly before the beginning of both Round 3 & Round 4, I will be doing a draw for one $10 Gift Certificate for Sweet Scoops, located at 1 Chambers Street, in Smiths Falls. They serve ice cream, coffee drinks, and sell fine chocolates and are open 7 days a week, including Saturdays 10am to 9pm, and Sundays 11am until 9pm. All players playing in the given round will be eligible for the draw.

    This tournament indeed seems open to anyone, from FIDE-titled to UNRated ...

    This tournament is open to all but there is no open section. Players below 1500 must play in the U1600 Section. Is it so difficult to understand such a simple thing?
    Just rename the strongest section : premier, championship, elite...And that's it.

    I don't know if the US (golf) Open is a valid comparison to chess. For the golf event - any professional can enter. It's only the amateurs that have a handicap limit. In chess - everyone can consider themselves "professional" (except in the few tournaments that have an "Amateur" option - pay a lower entry fee and not be eligible for a prize). The equivalent in chess would be to allow entries (below the rating cutoff point) from qualifying events - but not be allowed to win a prize.

    Mr Gauthier, I've noticed you seem to have a particular pedantic preoccupation with the term "open". While I myself value precision in language, I believe your issue stems from a lack of understanding of how the term is used to describe a sporting event or tournament.

    The term "open" is used to contrast with an invitational or closed tournament, where the organizers are the ones who decide on the competition list.

    For example, I would of loved to play in the US Open at Pebble beach last month. Sadly however, my handicap was not below the threshold to permit me to enter the qualifying rounds.
    In the midst of my crushing disappointment, I came up with two possible courses of action.

    1) Complain on twitter that the USGA doesn't actually run a US "Open" because I was not allowed to play.

    2) Hit the driving range and the practice putting green as much as I can in the hopes that one day I might be good enough to qualify.

    I'm confident that my selection of the second option was the best, as the tournament is OPEN to all who put in the effort to become an expert at their craft. I encourage you to take the same perspective in chess. If your rating does not permit you to play in the open section of a given tournament, open up a chess book and study it hard. Play as many games as possible at your local chess club and don't forget to analyze them!
