    Whiskey and Chess

    April 30, 2019

    From chessbase.com by Andre Schulz

    https://en.chessbase.com/post/chess-and-whiskey

On the last weekend of May an unusual tournament will be played in Scotland. Four top players, Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand, Ding Liren, and a fourth player who is not yet known, will play a rapid tournament in the Lindores Abbey Distillery, once a famous monastery and perhaps the place where Scotch whiskey had its origins.

Lindores Abbey or "The Church at the Water" was founded in 1191 by David Earl of Huntingdon on the southern banks of the River Tay where the river opens to the sea in a large estuary. The land was a present by his brother, King William I.

    CHESS STARS TOURNAMENT

The tournament will take place over two days and the games will be played in the distillery itself, overlooking the abbey ruins where no fewer than five monarchs once walked. The games will be streamed on screens throughout the visitor centre for the public (the game-side seats are by invitation only). Attendees will have the unique opportunity to meet and chat with the grandmasters in an informal atmosphere after the matches.

A proportion of ticket sales will also be donated to STAR, the Lindores Abbey chosen charity. Siblings Reunited, reunites brothers and sisters separated in the care system, through adoption or Kinship care by providing the opportunity for quality and regular Sibling contact.

Helen McKenzie Smith, the custodian of the Abbey with her husband Drew, commented: ‘It is an absolute honour for Lindores to host these grandmasters. We are thrilled to be welcoming some of the greatest chess players that the world has ever known to the abbey and the distillery, and to be bringing the game of kings back to the ancient abbey after a hiatus of more than 500 years. The monks who lived and worked here were recorded as being great chess players, so we feel this tournament is a fitting tribute to their history.’

        Rounds One to Six

I have been somewhat troubled by the spelling of “whisk(e)y”. I usually use the version without the “e”.

The spelling simply comes down to where the stuff is made.

Countries with "e"'s in their names (United States and Ireland) tend to use "whiskey," while those without an "e" (Scotland, Canada, and Japan) go with "whisky.

So, perhaps I should have used the simpler form in the title.

It was said that the temperature inside the distillery was cold and that Carlsen complained of it and was given use of a portable heater.

In any case, he won the tournament. The scores of the games:
