Seems obvious that it will be 6 rounds, but it is not really stated in the tournament details above?

I will be in Montreal at that time......the tournament is under negotiation with my better half!!

I don't see why that seems obvious. It's actually 5 rounds. Click on HORAIRE in the INFORMATIONS picklist, it shows this schedule:

Thanks Aris - it is that in Ontario generally, it is my experience that tournaments over long weekends are 6 rounds (2 rounds per day) - e.g. Toronto Open on the September Labour Day Weekend; the upcoming Mississauga Ontario Open on the Victoria Day Weekend. I believe the International is on the Thanksgiving Day long holiday weekend?

Yes it is on Thanksgiving weekend. I also think that to take advantage of a long weekend, an event should be 6 rounds (even 7 if you want to start Friday night). This would eliminate ties for first place if there are a large number of entries - although it would mean more work for the organizers and TD's (not to mention the players) - as well as extra rent for the playing hall. The latter reasons are probably why it's been limited to 5 rounds. Likewise - the Laval Open is being held on the long St Jean Baptiste weekend in June - but again it's only 5 rounds. I don't think there are any Quebec tournaments held on long weekends that are 6 rounds any more (but - again - there is nothing major in Quebec on Easter, May long weekend, or Labour Day weekends). .

That's an interesting post about those dates in Quebec. I moved from Montreal in 1991 to Ontario. Since then I got used to something in Toronto happening at Easter (of course for at least the next 3 years I'm running a chess festival in Kingston at Easter), and I got used to the Ontario Open over the May Victoria Day long weekend (which we get in Ottawa every 3-4 years). Then Labour Day weekend is often centered back in Toronto (certainly nothing in Ottawa that weekend). But back to Montreal, I guess I assumed that the Montreal Open was still going strong over the Labour Day long weekend. I believe that was my first multi-day tournament, back in 1973, MAYBE 7 rounds?! In my mind's eye, I can still see Larry Bevand patiently answering my father's questions about how chess tournaments actually worked. A wonderful memory, especially as Larry's and my chess lives have inter-circled many times over the years, and we have worked well on many chess things.

So anyway, my question to Hugh, is the Montreal Open not what it used to be back when Montreal chess ruled?! I'm thinking at least 70s, after Reykjavik, etc. Thank you in advance, best, Aris.

Starting in 2004, Quebec City ran the Robin Girard memorial on Labour Day weekend, since no one organized a Montreal Open that year (it had been held on Labour Day weekend annually since 1973). The Montreal Open resumed in 2008, so - to avoid conflicting with the Quebec City event - it was moved to the weekend after Labour Day, where it has remained (even though the last Robin Girard Memorial was held in 2010). It's averaged about 200 players every year since 2008.

Except for a 7-round event in 1973, the Montreal Open was usually 6 rounds until the 1990's, when it became 5 rounds (with a couple of exceptions).

The 1958-59 Montreal Open was Montreal's largest pre-Fischer boom Swiss (I don't have a count in front of me for the 1956 Canadian Open) with 104 players. It was a 14 round Swiss played over 14 Sundays (and almost everyone played all their games). Laszlo Witt won.

The 1971 Montreal Open was an 8 round event held over two weekends in November in the Sun Life cafeteria (I wish we had free sites like that still). Adrian Michaely won the 58 player event (with a couple of Spraggetts winning prizes as well).

The 1972 Montreal Open was also held over two weekends in November in the McGill cafeteria. 222 took part in this Fischer boom edition - won by Edward Formanek.

The 1973 Montreal Open was the first of a few "shopping mall" events held in Montreal - Labour Day weekend at the Galeries d'Anjou. The top section (played in a separate room) was won by Leo WIlliams and Kevin Spraggett - both 6-0. The rest of us played in the mall - if I recall correctly, almost all the stores were closed on Sunday and Monday, so it was reasonably quiet.. The top section was 6 rounds; the others played 7. 270 players took part.
