  • Montreal Summer Chess Classic (July 31st - August 4th, 2019)

    We have the pleasure to announce that the Montreal Summer Chess Classic will be held from July 31 - August 4, 2019, at college Jean-de-Brebeuf. This tournament is open to everyone and will feature an IM Norm invitation section (10 players, round-robin). The main goal of this tournament is to provide local players an opportunity to earn an International Master norm. In the second edition of this tournament, Olivier Kenta Chiku-Ratté (Canada) and Dagur Ragnarsson (Island) both achieved an IM norm!

    -IM Norm Invitation Section: Round-robin, 10 players. On invitation only.
    -Open, U1800, Juniors U1200: Swiss system, five (5) round, open to everyone.

    -Time control : 90'/game + 30" incr. starting from move 1 for Invitation, Open & U1800, 60'/end + 30" incr. for Juniors U1200

    -Schedule: One round per day at 1pm. For the Invitation Section, rounds will be held at 10am and 3:30pm from August 1-4. One round only on July 31st at 1pm.

    -Prizes:

    Invitation section : 1st - 1000$, 2nd – 500$
    Open section: 1st - 500$, 2nd – 200$
    U1800 section: 1st - 250$, 2nd – 100$, 3rd - 50$
    Juniors U1200 section: Trophies for top 3 players

        Pas de toute. After I posted that I noticed the title of the thread was correct but the reference to summer was only in the main post... Just struck me as funny at the moment. Good luck! :)

            First confirmed participant in the Invitation section: IM Thanh Nha Doong (Canada). Duong is a 48 years old engineer and was born in Vietnam. He became IM by finishing tied for 2nd place at the Canadian Closed in 1999. Duong was retired from the chess competition for 8 years and is making a comeback at chess since three years.               Second confirmed participant in the Invitation section: FM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux (Canada). Shawn is 15 years old and lives in Montreal. He is the current Quebec scholastic champion. Shawn became FIDE Master at 11 years old and earned his first IM Norm at the 2018 NAYCC. He participated to both editions of this tournament.                 Third confirmed participant in the Invitation section: FM Zong Yang Yu (Canada). Zong Yang is 20 years old and is a University student. He is the current Quebec champion. In 2015, he became FIDE Master at 16 years old. He earned his first IM norm at the 2017 Canadian Closed Chess Championship.                               57 pre-registered players. The Open section just got stronger with many titled players: FM Sylvain Barbeau, FM Mike Ivanov, NM Tyler Tanaka, NM Ananda Saha, CM Kevin Zhong, WFM Alexandra Botez.
