    Banff Open 2019 Nov 9-11 Open for Entries - 1st 100 only

This year the Banff Open will be in 2 sections. Over and under 1800. We will only be accepting entries in advance, not at the site.

    Some of the highlights include
    i) A buffet style dinner at my house on Sunday night
ii) Majestic view of the mountains from the playing site - This year our room is on the ground level, with easy access to outside to stand beside any elk or bears!
iii) International Arbiter/Organizer Mark Dutton with be the Chief Arbiter. Ably assisted by his lovely wife Christine Dutton.
iv) Nightly shows at the Banff Centre, which are TBA.
    v) Welcome to one of the most precious, protected places in the world. A visit here offers the chance to experience the spectacular Canadian Rocky Mountains and glacier-fed lakes, wildlife at its wildest and small-town charm that only Banff can offer.

Don't delay, enter today and get your early bird discount. For more information please visit our website http://www.albertachess.org/home/sch...19-banff-open/

Thank you Neil and SoCA. I can't wait to see the t-shirts. I am please to announce the participation of chess legend Viktors Pupols in our tournament. Viktors is perhaps best known for beating Bobby Fischer in the 1955 US Junior Championship on the black side of a Latvian Gambit!

Not really, nor would not expect them to do so. They play in a different league. Eric was nice enough to say something positive on a FB post about Banff Open. We are a long way off from inviting gms to our tournament. Also Eric was nice enough to give permission to let us do a bobblehead in his image last year, which we greatly appreciate.

Thank you Neil, very generous of SoCA, on top of their other sponsorship. Sadly though we have only 17 entries so far, but a lot of people have told me they are playing who have not signed up yet. I hope they are waiting to enter just before price goes up by $10 at the end of September. If it is for another reason that you want to share with me, let me know at ianfindlay2314@gmail.com.
This is the 1st year that we have asked for payments in advance, so that might account for the slowness of entries. We have another master entered. Georgi Kostadinov, who is one of Calgary's top players and is a regular of the Banff Open.

The spreadsheet has been updated on the website.http://www.albertachess.org/home/sch...19-banff-open/

Take a look at the Album from last year's event in Banff. This is an awesome tournament site and we encourage every Canadian chess player to see this place and take part!

See you in November! From Mark and Christine Dutton

Due to our fast time controls, you should have some time to see Banff. Here is a Youtube video for top 20 things to do in Banff. It does not even mention the Banff Centre and their concerts and restaurants, which may have been overlooked. This video has some amazing views of the mountains and lakes in the area.

So far we are up to 14 entries. Just remember, accommodations do sell out, and prices do go up closer to the event for local hotels and bed and breakfasts, so best to reserve early for Banff. Entry fee goes up $10 Oct. 1 and we will only accept 100 entries.
