  • IM norm for Rohan Talukdar in Philadelphia

He finished just out of the money but had a plus one score against 5 GMs played (1 win, 4 draws).

Congratulations to Rohan. Well done. It looks like Windsor will get there first IM soon.

You can play through Rohan's fascinating 4th round game, complete with notes, on the CFC Newsfeed:

A question: didn't Ray Stone win the Cdn Closed in the mid 80s? I wonder why that didn't get him an IM title?

Ray Stone won it in 1985...but I don't believe it was a Zonal year.

I believe Ray had all his IM norms but was just short of 2400 Fide rating. Another Canadian talent who stopped just short of the title. Unfortunate.

It was much harder to get the title back then. Milan Vukadinov was definite IM strength but lacked the playing opportunities.

Barbosa is one tough old school GM. Too bad about the missed win which would have rewarded some very creative moves (like Rd5!)

The game really had it all: lots of theory, two sacs, tricky endgame with zugzwangs.

I'd thought both players were on increment from move 40 (exchange sac) but it seems the TC gave them an extra 30 min there... even so, the win with 49.Kh4 (only move) would have been really hard to find at move 41.

I think the issue was expiring norms. You had to achieve your norms within a certain time period or they expired. He also came very close to having three norms in the right time frame but missed norms by half a point several times due to nervousness which caused him to play far below his ability in the decisive final round games.
