Just a note about Mecking. He was born in Brazil in 1952 and reached the zenith of his chess career in the 1970s. He got his grandmaster title in 1972 and won the Interzonals in Petropolis 1972 and Manilla 1976. The highest ELO he achieved was 2635, in 1977 when he was ranked number four in the world. His chess career was interrupted by a serious illness, later said to be myasthenia gravis.

A letter in chess.com from 2018:

When I was in vacation some years ago in Brazil I saw a guy reading a chess book at the beach and we began to talk. He was from Chile and told me that when he was young he was a huge fan from Mequinho.I think you will find a lot of people admiring Mequinho in South America.

Bobby Fisher said once I think in the 1970s something about Mequinho being the most dangerous opponent for him - a huge compliment in a time with so many good players around, most of them from Russia.

I would not be very surprise to hear that Bobby said this because his legendary antipathy towards Russian players.

Nobody knows how far Mequinho would get if he would stay healthy. He could certainly become world champion, as a lot of people saw him as talented as Bobby.

There is a book with Mequinho games. From time to time I go through one of the games, which are very interesting.
