The Korobov- Le Quang Liem game became very interesting when 5 knights appeared on the board but by that point I think Le Quang had missed his winning opportunity.

Grischuk had an edge but maybe time pressure played a role as they repeated moves.

Peter Svidler missed 25.b3! (the tickler) a profound move which forces the black queen to back up (I love that idea)

Aronian overwhelms Maghsoodloo with sharp tactics (although according to the computer Aronian missed a lot in terms of accuracy)

Harikrishna - Fedoseev is humorous in that white misses the winning shot of Na6 but then wheels his knight around again and wins with Nxa6!

Aravindh - Tomashevsky is a good positional game where the black queen starts late but gets a good workout and the game is decided by passed pawns.

Nihal-Safarli white started with a quiet Ruy Lopez but built up positional trumps so that by strategic means his position was +10 before the tactics flowed. Havent seen that in a while.

Hikaru tried to play it strategic but was overwhelmed by a tactical blizzard after he accepted his opponents queen sacrifice.

The Shak strikes first in rd 2! What a dizzying amount of 2 knight combinational possibilities with a few other sacrifices thrown in !!

The participation of the youngest player Nodirbek Abdusattorov from Uzbekistan at the World Cup has been completed today after his loss to the Russian Maxim Matlakov in the first round. Despite this, the 14-year-old does not seem much depressed during the interview with the Press Centre.

‘I have played with world grandmasters before and I have no fear of their names. Yes, I’m out of the Cup but it’s my first experience and I’m very content. I wasn’t too strong at the end, made a mistake, but in general it was an equal battle,’ says Nodirbek.

It should be added that Nodirbek lost to Maxim Matlakov only during the tiebreak.

‘The organization of the Tournament is just excellent. I feel comfortable despite Siberian climate,’ adds the chess player.

Nodirbek also tells why he chose this kind of sport. ‘My father taught me to play chess when I was 4. Since then I’ve been moving forward and have already achieved some success.’

Nodirbek Abdusattorov got the title of grandmaster at the age of 13 years 1 month old. In the whole chess history only two chess players have obtained this title earlier than the Uzbekistan player.

    World Cup 2019 Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia

    September 12, 2019

    Round One

    Playoffs (1)

    From the official site:

A large group of participants secured the overall victory already in rapid chess: Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Evgeny Tomashevsky, Dmitry Andreikin, Maxim Matlakov, Sanan Sjugirov, Alexandr Predke (all from Russia), Benjamin Bok (Netherlands), David Anton Guijarro (Spain), Tamir Nabaty (Israel), Luke McShane (England), Igor Kovalenko (Latvia), Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (Germany), Le Quang Liem (Vietnam), and Mohammad Amin Tabatabaei (Iran).

Vladimir Fedoseev (Russia), Yu Yangyi, Wang Hao (both from China), Boris Gelfand (Israel), Anton Korobov (Ukraine), and Eltaj Safarli (Azerbaijan) were more successful than their rivals in 10-minute games and also advanced to the Second Round.

The young Chithambaram Aravindh (India) defeated the experienced Michael Adams (England): after seven draws in a row, the Indian grandmaster managed to win in a second blitz game.

The dramatic match between Kacper Piorun (Poland) and Nijat Abasov (Azerbaijan) also reached the blitz stage. The players exchanged victories in rapid and 10-minute games, but Abasov proved stronger in blitz.
