IOM International Chess Limited Announces ‘FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss’

Douglas, Isle of Man, 4 June 2019 — The ‘FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss’ will be held in the Isle of Man from 10 to 21 October, and is expected to be the strongest Swiss-system tournament in the history of chess. The prize fund will be US$432,500, with a first prize of $70,000.

The tournament is part of the 2020 FIDE World Championship cycle, with the winner qualifying for the Candidates’ Tournament which will produce a challenger to Magnus Carlsen in the next FIDE World Championship Match.

The starting field of 160 players will feature 120 FIDE qualifiers, with the world’s top-100 players invited based on their average rating over a 12-month period. The other 40 participants will be chosen as “wildcards” allocated by the tournament director, Alan Ormsby, including four spots allocated to Chess.com online qualifiers.

    Update - 10th June
You can see the list of players qualified for the FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss Tournament 2019, as of June 1st, on the list attached below.

“After five years of hosting the Isle of Man International, we are delighted to be working with FIDE to incorporate our 2019 event into the World Championship cycle, made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Scheinberg family” said Alan Ormsby. “l am using the 40 wildcards wisely, ensuring that we have the diversity that the Isle of Man International is associated with, including places for a number of world-class female players and juniors. I’m also pleased to give some local players the opportunity to play in such a prestigious event, ensuring that the Isle of Man is represented.”

"Swiss tournaments are one of the most attractive formats to compete in our sport: they produce very interesting clashes, allowing rising stars or not-so-strong players to cross swords with members of the chess elite. This democratic approach has many supporters, and it was a pending matter for FIDE to have a massive Swiss Open among our official competitions. The association with the Isle of Man organizers was a natural move, given their experience and the calibre that their tournament has reached. And making it part of the race for the World Championship title will add even more interest to an already fascinating event”, said FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich.

The FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss will be held over 11 rounds between 10 and 21 October, with a rest day on the 16th. It will be held at the Comis Hotel and Golf Resort, one of the island’s leading hotels, based 7km outside Douglas. It is expected that around 35 countries will be represented.

"We're ecstatic that our titled users will have the opportunity to qualify for an event as prestigious as the FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss" said Daniel Rensch, chief chess officer of Chess.com. "We believe in the power of online chess in producing strong players who have built their chess foundation through technology and we're excited to see Chess.com's qualifying players participate against a field featuring many of the top players in the world."

The official opening ceremony on 9 October will welcome a number of dignitaries, including Howard Quayle MHK, Chief Minister of the Isle of Man. “I am honoured to have been invited to attend the opening and closing ceremonies of this prestigious Chess Tournament” said Mr Quayle. “It is a real honour that the world of chess will be celebrated here on the Isle of Man, and I am delighted to welcome all the passionate chess players to the Island in October.”

Isle of Man Grand Swiss 2019

      September 28 , 2019

      Preview

From John Saunders at the official site:

In just under a month’s time there begins the newest, and potentially most exciting, qualification event in the 2019/2020 World Chess Championship cycle – the inaugural FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss tournament, to be played over 11 rounds in the Isle of Man. The primary purpose of this tournament is to fill one of the eight places in the Candidates’ Tournament to be held in the first half of 2020. It features a phenomenal field of 160 leading players who aspire to the title and an eye-popping first prize of $70,000, with a total prize fund of $432,500. The latter detail has also attracted the two biggest names of all, Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, who head a competitor list featuring 26* players rated 2700 or more.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for October 9th, round one is on 10th October and the last on 21st October with a rest day after six rounds on 16th October . The venue is the COMIS Hotel and Golf Resort which is halfway between the Isle of Man’s capital, Douglas, and the airport at Ronaldsway, with a journey of around 7 kilometres in each direction. The tournament director is Alan Ormsby (Isle of Man), the chief arbiter IA Alex Holowczak (England), the Fair Play officer is IA Andrew Howie (Scotland), with Chess.com’s onsite commentary being provided by GM Daniel King (England) and IM Anna Rudolf (Hungary).

This year's event is composed of 100 qualifiers, based on a rating average from 12 lists (July 2018 to June 2019), topped up with 16 holders of world and continental championship titles, one qualifier from the Association of Chess Professionals (ACP) tour, three nominees of the FIDE President, and 40 wildcards nominated by the organisers, IOM International Chess Ltd. Another way to appreciate the strength of the line-up is to consider that Baadur Jobava of Georgia, one of the world’s most exciting and popular GMs, is ranked 101st in the field.

More pertinently, here is a list of the world top 30 players who are taking part in the Grand Swiss in addition to Carlsen and Caruana. In current rating order: Anish Giri (Netherlands), Wesley So (USA), Viswanathan Anand (India), Leinier Dominguez (USA), Yu Yangyi (China), Sergey Karjakin (Russia), Alexander Grischuk (Russia), Levon Aronian (Armenia), Vladislav Artemiev (Russia), Pentala Harikrishna (India), Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Radoslaw Wojtaszek (Poland), Nikita Vitiugov (Russia), Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Poland), Peter Svidler (Russia), Wang Hao (China), Wei Yi (China) and Bu Xiangzhi (China).

The tournament provides a younger generation with a chance to shine, with a couple of them maybe in the running for the Candidates’ qualifying place. The world’s highest rated junior 20-year-old Wei Yi of China seems to have been around for a long time and this tournament could provide his breakthrough into the elite. Ditto, the world’s second highest rated junior, Jeffery Xiong (USA), aged 18, who is improving fast. He made an impact on his Isle of Man debut in 2017, losing only to very big names (Carlsen, Caruana, Adams), going on to show his increasing strength and solidity in 2018, finishing an unbeaten 3rd=. Also playing are the world’s 4th, 5th and 7th highest rated juniors: the runaway winner of the 2018 world junior championship Parham Maghsoodloo (Iran, aged 19), Samuel Sevian (USA, aged 18) and Alexey Sarana (Russia, aged 19).

Isle of Man Grand Swiss 2019

        October 1 , 2019

        Withdrawals

Two of the leading players have now withdrawn from the 2019 Chess.com FIDE Grand Swiss. They are Anish Giri, 2780 and Leinier Dominguez, 2763.

Chess24 says that one reason for Anish Giri to withdraw would be to help ensure qualification by rating – though that could be controversial.

        https://chess24.com/en/read/news/nik...is-treacherous

Should MVL have entered and then be able to withdraw too?

MVL tweets – Grand Swiss rules supposedly forbid players to withdraw without a valid reason from the tournament after signing the agreement – otherwise I would have entered the tournament back in July if I knew I had the option to withdraw at any time.

Rule 2.5 states: Players who fail to provide a satisfactory reason for withdrawal, after they have signed the contract, could be sanctioned by the decision of the FIDE Presidential Board. If a player has already qualified to Candidates 2020 via World Cup 2019, he/she is entitled not to participate in GS 2019 even after signing this contract.

And Magnus has this pointed tweet:

2.5 “could be sanctioned by the decision of the FIDE Presidential Board” Good thing Anish Giri has influential supporters on that very board then.

        ____________

Syonnain (tweet) - It all depends on the interpretation of "satisfactory reason for withdrawal", doesn't it? Many could make the case that Giri's decision is perfectly justified given his situation, and that the shame that comes with it is punishment enough.

Stefan Loffler (tweet) - Obviously this is about @anishgiri´s withdrawal from the Isle of Man tournament as he is very likely to reach the Candidates by rating. Protecting his rating lead, mainly over @Vachier_Lagrave, is a highly rational reason, but what is deemed a satisfactory one?

Eric Hansen is playing. 9/11 or 8.5/11 and a good tie-break will be enough for qualifying for the Candidates.

                        Comments on Pairings

Games start at 3 PM local, which is 10 AM Montreal/Toronto time.

Looks like it will be a fantastic tournament. Eric starts off against Inarkiev!

                        Online Comments

From the EC Forum: Round 1 pairings are up and it’s difficult to know where to start regarding interesting matches with such an incredible field and it’s going to be a nightmare to choose what to watch. Start time is Thursday 3pm. Six of the top 10 players in the world are choosing not to play (Ding, Giri, Nepo, MVL, Mamedyarov, Dominguez) and Carlsen & Caruana are of course not playing for the Candidates, which means that effectively the top seeds for Candidates qualification are Wesley So and Vishy Anand. Here are the England GM matches:

                        Jobava Baadur (2617) v Howell David (2694)
                        Jones Gawain (2688) v Abdusattorov Nodirbek (2608)
                        Yilmaz Mustafa (2595) v Mcshane Luke J (2682)
                        Arkell Keith (2447) v Oparin Grigoriy (2654)
                        ___________

                        - For the pairings, isn't it just 1-78, 2-79, 3-80, etc...?
So, Magnus would have an easy 2636 GM in the 1st round

                        - Pairings are out!! Nice game Tari vs Levon

                        - To GM Vlastimil Jansa: He is old. Teach them how to play chess!!!

                        - Interesting bet: after which round does no player have a 100% score anymore?

                        - after round 5 I would guess or round 4

                        - after round 5 is more likely

                        - My guess: round 4, so no-one with 4/4.

                        - where is Firouzja?

                        - Firouzja will not play, unfortunately !!!

                        - lol, adly ahmed and kuzubov have the same rating but A comes before K, so Adly was considered the higher seed and got paired against the lowest seed compared to Kuzubov who got paired against the highest seed.

                        - Go Giri! But Seriously Kamsky is looking to do some damage in this tourney. Can you imagine if he got into the Candidates?

Too many entertaining games. Too many great fights (I know, I know. Bliss! Just wonderful. But my head is swimming from too many moves and variations.)
