    Grand Chess Tour Bucharest 2019

    October 5, 2019

    2019 Superbet Rapid & Blitz

The 2019 Superbet Rapid & Blitz is Europe’s new addition to the tour and will provide another unique location for the 2019 tour participants. The tournament is sponsored by Superbet Romania and will be hosted at the prestigious Stejarii Country Club in Bucharest. The facility boasts an amazing range of sports including squash, tennis, indoor swimming, aerobics, martial arts and even a golf driving range. It will form an ideal setting for what could well be a pivotal stop as the players fight for one of the four key qualifying spots to the GCT Finals in London.

    __________

There are too many major chess events with the word “Grand” in them.

For example the Grand Swiss Isle of Man is on from the 9-20 of October, The Grand Prix Hamburg, Germany is on 4-18 November and the Grand Chess Tour Bucharest is the 4-11 of November and the Tata Steel Grand Chess Tour is 20-27 in Calcutta and then, the Grand Chess Tour Finals in London 30 November to 10 December and finally, Grand Prix Tel Aviv from 10-24 December.

It is difficult to keep track of them all. Maybe a blackboard with the events on it as in a horse race-betting salon!

The star of the day is Quang Liem Le who has scored 7/9. It should be remarked that he was World Blitz Champion in 2013.

Here is what Peter Doggers had to say about today’s round:

Anton Korobov didn't disappoint either and is still the leader at Superbet Rapid & Blitz Grand Chess Tour with one day to go.

Saturday was the day of Le. His first rapid win against Vishy Anand on Friday apparently gave him wings, and today the former world blitz champion was in a class of his own. (The second-best performer today was Levon Aronian, with 5.5/9.)

In the first round of the day, Le took down the leader right away and made the field even more tightly packed at the top. Korobov must have miscalculated in the endgame:

After draws with Sergey Karjakin and Aronian, Le won no less than four games in a row, against Anand, Vladislav Artemiev, Wesley So and Anish Giri. The Dutchman was completely crushed, and left the board in disbelief of what just happened:

Le also had a bit of luck on his side, as he survived a lost position vs. Fabiano Caruana but that was not just luck, because the Vietnamese player also showed perfect defense in the subsequent rook ending for 64 moves.

Yesterday Korobov said his main goal was not to lose 18 blitz games in a row, but that turned out to be too modest. After his first-round loss with Le, the Ukrainian scored four draws and a loss to Anand but then suddenly won two games in a row, vs. Caruana and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.

In both games Korobov was lost, but he has more lives than a cat in this tournament.

Korobov notably has been playing the somewhat old-fashioned Rubinstein variation (4.e3) against the Nimzo-Indian and in his interview at the end of the day he revealed that the other day he had been reading Mark Taimanov's book on the opening, which was first published in Russia in 1956!

                    Grand Chess Tour Bucharest 2019

                    November 10, 2019

                    2019 Superbet Rapid & Blitz

                    Blitz

Levon Aronian only finished in 5th place with 10 points from 18 games in this weekend's blitz tournament, but when combined with his 10 points in the rapid, his total tally tied him for first place with Sergey Karjakin, who won the blitz portion jointly with Le Quang Liem scoring 11/18. In the resulting playoff, Aronian scored a full point in the second game to snare the overall victory in the Romanian capital, Bucharest.

The Superbet Rapid & Blitz finished in Bucharest with 18 rounds of 5 minutes plus 3-second delay blitz chess. Anton Korobov kept a narrow edge from the rapid through the first half of the blitz tournament, but faded on Sunday as he suffered a five-game losing streak at the outset and could not recover. In the first half of the day, it looked like former blitz champion Le Quang Liem could be on the verge of adding a first Grand Chess Tour title to his list of accolades this year. Despite finishing with 11/18, tied with Sergey Karjakin at the top of the blitz standings, he needed to post much higher numbers to make up the ground lost in the rapid tournament where he scored in the bottom half.

Karjakin's 9 points and 5th place in the rapid standings combined with his 11 points at the close of the blitz left him equal with Levon Aronian on 20/36. Karjakin missed a clear win in his final round blitz game, and was even lucky to draw in the end, which undoubtedly left a sour taste in his mouth as he moved on to the playoff. After a draw in the first game, Aronian won a near-miniature in game two to take home the tournament trophy. Both players shared the first two prizes totalling USD $31,250 apiece.

The big star of the day was, in fact, Vladislav Artemiev. Like the other wildcard, Le Quang Liem, the other day, Artemiev scored a fantastic, undefeated 7/9. And like against Le, Anish Giri lost in a ferocious attack to the strongest blitz player of the day (although in this game the Dutchman had outplayed his opponent in the opening and early middlegame).
