Dear chess friends,
The Hart House Chess Club is excited and proud to announce that the University of Toronto will submit an official bid to host the 2020 Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championship.
As many of you will know, this event is the largest and most prestigious chess competition at the collegiate level in the Americas, bringing together the strongest players and most distinguished institutions from across North, South and Central America and the Caribbean.
We are particularly thrilled to share with you this exciting news less than one and half month before the bid submission—it has been far too long since the last PanAms were hosted north of the border. We believe that a PanAm hosted in Toronto would represent a unique opportunity to remind the world of the extraordinarily vibrant Canadian chess community. It would also be a wonderful way to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Hart House Chess Club as well as the 100th year anniversary of Hart House.
If hosted in Toronto, the 2020 PanAms will reach students from all over Canada for whom tournaments of this size and caliber are normally inaccessible due to prohibitive costs. For this reason, an increasing number of Canadian University Chess Clubs are offering their kind endorsement to our bid and are expressing a strong interest in participating in the games (see list of Universities below).
Faithful to the vision of a Canadian Collegiate Chess renaissance, the members of our PanAms Committee are working tirelessly to put together a truly incredible tournament. In our efforts, we are assisted by a team of experts, showing true dedication to the cause. We've fully planned our bid, made agreements with top class professionals for every aspect of the event and we've booked a beautiful venue in the heart of Toronto. All that remains before the bid is submitted on November 15th is securing some more funding for our ambitious project. Any support we may be able to get, we will welcome it with open arms.
There are many more ambitious plans we would love to share with you—and you will hear about them very soon!—that would make the 2020 Toronto PanAms truly an event to remember. But none of them will be possible without the support of our beloved chess community. Maybe you or your family or friends would be willing to help us cover some costs; maybe your workplace might be able to offer a sponsorship. Whatever you can spare -- be it $10 or $1000 -- we would be extremely grateful to receive in support of this exciting project and as a contribution to the legacy of Canadian and Hart House Chess.
We are incredibly proud of our bid and we sincerely hope you will join us at the 2020 Toronto PanAms as competitors, coaches, spectators, and lovers of chess!
