        European Team Championship Open 2019

        October 24, 2019

        Round One

The first round was played today in both the Open and Women’s events. The games and commentary starts at 15:00 local time, which is 7 AM Toronto/Montreal time.

In the open tournament 40 federations are represented, while 32 teams are signed on to the Women's tournament.
The host is the Georgian Chess Federation and the tournament is staged at the Sheraton Hotel in Batumi — the same venue that hosted FIDE officials during the 2018 General Assembly.

Although the Russian team will start without their top four active players — Ian Nepomniachtchi, Sergey Karjakin, Alexander Grischuk and Vladislav Artemiev are missing — they still occupy the top spot in the team ranking list, with an average of 2722 Elo. Azerbaijan follows in second place ahead of England, Poland and Armenia.

The Russian team is also leading in the women's tournament and features World Championship challenger Aleksandra Goryachkina. Other stars, Alexandra Kosteniuk and Natalia Pogonina, are absent. Georgia and the Ukraine follow in team rank, but Ukraine will play without the Muzychuk sisters.

The tournaments are played over nine rounds according to Swiss system. The first round will take place on Thursday, October 24th, with the last round on Saturday, November 2nd. The 29th of October is a rest day. All rounds start at 11:00 AM UTC (15:00 local time (13:00 CEST, 7:00 AM EDT), and one hour earlier for the last round.

          European Team Championship Open 2019

          October 24, 2019

          Round One

The new grandmaster from Denmark faces Daniil Dubov:

          Round 1, Oct. 24
          Russia – Denmark
          Board 4
Bjerre, Jonas Buhl – Dubov, Daniil
          C88 Ruy Lopez, Closed, anti-Marshall

          1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 O-O 8.a4 d5 9.exd5 Na5 10.Nxe5 Nxb3 11.cxb3 Bb7 12.Nc6 Bxc6 13.dxc6 Bc5 14.d3 Bxf2+ 15.Kxf2 Qd4+ 16.Be3 Ng4+ 17.Kf3 Nxe3 18.Rxe3 Rae8 19.Re2 Qf6+ 20.Kg3 g5 21.Rf2 Qd6+ 22.Kh3 Qh6+ 23.Kg4 Qh4+ 0-1

Daniil always says what he thinks. These tweets about him today:

Daniil Dubov says being on tilt after the Isle of Man encouraged him to sacrifice on f2 very quickly, but some brilliant opening preparation saw him gain a full point for Russia in Round 1 of the European Team Championship!

Dubov: "It’s not team preparation – it’s my preparation. I think my team captain was surprised. They actually sort of asked me to calm down and not play some ridiculous lines... If [8…d5!] works then it’s a groundbreaking discovery"

Dubov is not the man you want for polite diplomacy :)
"It’s inspiring to get to Batumi, especially after the Isle of Man, which is probably the worst place in the world in my rating from now"

          _______

Kirill Alekseenko was unbeaten in 19 classical games in the World Cup and then on the Isle of Man, but he lost the first game in Batumi to Sune Berg Hansen!

          Round 1, Oct. 24

After 11 draws on the Isle of Man Jorden van Foreest has already spoilt things by winning his first game in Batumi

Anish Giri was accused of withdrawing from the Isle of Man Swiss so he wouldn’t lose rating points in his quest to be in the Candidates. Here he draws with Macovei (2426) and loses 8.1 ELO points

The English team is Adams, Howell, Jones and Pert. Was Short asked to be on it? Who knows but Pert did beat Schreiner for England to draw the match with Austria

Nigel Short (tweet) - The European Team Chess Ch. begins in Batumi, Georgia! I don't actually recall being asked if I was available to play for England (and, more to the point, nor does my inbox), but I am sure Nick Pert (Elo 2557) will make an excellent replacement.

                  Some comments on chessbomb:

                  - All the books that Naiditsch wrote, he should reread them himself to improve his chess!
                  - Naiditsch was strong, maybe his age is getting to him
                  - He can still save the game, Kuzubov has only 53 seconds left

                  Another great game by Giri!

                        Round Four

                        Round 4, Oct. 27
                        Armenia – Ukraine
                        Board 1
                        Aronian, Levon – Ivanchuk, Vassily
                        A36 English, ultra-symmetrical

                        1.c4 g6 2.Nc3 c5 3.g3 Bg7 4.Bg2 Nc6 5.d3 d6 6.Qd2 Qa5 7.Nd5 Qd8 8.Nc3 Qa5 9.e3 Bxc3 10.bxc3 f5 11.Nh3 Nf6 12.Rb1 Qc7 13.O-O Bd7 14.Qe2 e5 15.f3 O-O 16.e4 fxe4 17.fxe4 Kg7 18.Bg5 Be6 19.Nf2 Rf7 20.Nd1 Raf8 21.Ne3 h6 22.Bxf6+ Rxf6 23.Rxf6 Rxf6 24.Bf3 h5 25.h4 Qf7 26.Bg2 Qd7 27.Bf3 b6 28.Qg2 Ne7 29.Bd1 Ng8 30.Rb2 Nh6 1/2-1/2

It was a real treat to see that, after the game, Aronian and Ivanchuk went off to a room and analyzed the game on a small board crowded with the pieces. Both usually are attired in opposition to the dress code. Today Vassily had a bright yellow windbreaker or track suit on; Levon was more conservative. I say all this because Azmaiparashvili has been hanging around for several days – though I doubt that he would confront either of these grandmasters.

England came ahead of the Netherlands today. McShane beat L’Ami and Adams and Giri drew.

I don’t know if our younger members have ever read Trilby, an 1895 novel by George Du Maurier. In any case there is a character called Svengali who dominates and hypnotizes a young Irish girl to become a great singer.

There was this tweet today: Coach Jan Gustafsson is the Svengali, Anish Giri just the conduit.

A bitter tweet by Paco Vallejo after losing his game to Bosiocic of Croatia:

Twice I lost against the same opponent in Batumi. Previous game the trick was to offer me a draw in a lost position after I was thinking for a while to disturb me. Today, the new trick was not to write down the moves in time trouble, he was like 4-5 moves behind the reality.
