    After great deliberation and an anonymous vote, the panel of judges narrowed down a longlist and announced a shortlist for the FIDE Book of the Year 2018 award. Three books are running for the prestigious award (in random order):

    The Complete Manual of Positional Chess (by Konstantin Sakaev and Konstantin Landa)

    This book co-authored by two Grandmasters focuses on numerous positional concepts such as quick development, fighting for the center, material balance, etc.

    Together with the Candidates: Budapest 1950 to Berlin 2018 (by Alexey Kuzmin)

    The book presents the history of Candidates tournaments and matches and offers many tests position taken from these competitions.

    Applying Logic in Chess (by Erik Kislik)

    In his work Erik Kislik proves that many important topics such as pawn-structure, material imbalance, compensation, etc., can be tackled applying logic.

    Unlike other awards by FIDE Trainers’ Commission, the Averbakh/Boleslavsky Award for Book of the Year is judged separately. The panel includes three judges: Nigel Short, Artur Jussupow, and the World's oldest living grandmaster, Yuri Averbakh.

    "We congratulate the finalists! The competition level was very high, all nine books have their merits", Artur Jussupow said.

    The judges hope to complete their work by the end of November and announce the winner.

    About the Author

    Ivan Sokolov was born in Bosnia 1968. He is one of the most flamboyant attacking players of his time, reaching over a period of 13 years, the top 12 spot of the FIDE, the official ranking of the International Chess Organization. He notably has beaten world champions like Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand and Topalov. He is also a successful commentator and writer with bestsellers as "Ivan's Chess Journey", “Winning Chess Middlegames”, “The Ruy Lopez Revisited”, “The Strategic Nimzo-Indian” and “Sacrifice and Initiative”. Now he coaches the most promising Dutch & Belgium youth players and being employed to develop the publishing program of Thinkers Publishing.

    This book is incredibly good, I found myself engrossed in the instructive material and learned a great deal from the well-chosen and well-presented examples. FM Carsten Hansen, American Chess Magazine 09/2017 – 5 stars rated.

    "Together with the Candidates" wins 2018 FIDE Book of the Year

    We are delighted to announce the winner of the 2018 FIDE Book of the Year, also known as the Averbakh/Boleslavsky Award in respect of these two giants of chess literature.
    GM Artur Jussupow presided over the three-man independent jury, which also included GM Nigel Short and the World's oldest living grandmaster, Yuri Averbakh.

    They originally selected three titles for shortlisting: "The quality of the entire competition was very high. All three books in the final were so good that each book was the favorite of a juror! Nonetheless, we have a clear winner with one first and two-second preferences."

    "On behalf of FIDE and the Trainers’ Commission, I would like to thank the jurors for giving up their time to go through the nominated books and select the shortlist and the winners", added GM Jacob Aagaard, Chairman of FIDE’s Trainer’s Commission (TRG).
