    Sunway Sitges Open 2019

    December 14, 2019

The Sunway Sitges International Chess Festival is a chess tournament that has been played in Sitges since 2014 and organized by the Sunway Playa Golf & Spa hotel in Sitges, Spain (Barcelona). The tournament is open and takes place on the premises of the hotel itself, at 10 rounds and with a 90 minute game rate with an increase of 30 seconds per play, valid for Elo FCE, FEDA and FIDE .

The Sixth edition is taking place from December 12 to 22 with more than € 25,000 in prizes to distribute among 100 players.

Each night a movie is shown – among these Garry Kasparov versus Deep Thought Documentary, Magnus Carlsen – Informe Robinson, Bobby Fischer Against the World, Capablanca – El Rey, El amor por la madera, La Doble K, Historia de una Rivalidad and Judith Polgar Brilliant Brain Nova. On the 18th there will be a broadcast show of F.C. Barcelona – Real Madrid.

Sitges is a coastal town in Spain's Catalonia region, southwest of Barcelona, backed by the mountainous Parc Natural del Garraf. It's known for its Mediterranean beaches and seafront promenade lined with grand mansions. The compact old town and surrounding streets are filled with shops, restaurants, and many gay bars and nightclubs.

It might be remembered that ChessTalk covered Aman Hambleton at Sunway Sitges in 2017:

The Festival is very popular with Indians. This from ChessBase Indian:

When it comes to tournaments outside India there are events like Abu Dhabi Masters, Dubai Open, Sharjah Masters, where find nearly 50% of the participants as Indians. However, this is because the middle east is not so far from India. It's just a three hour flight! When it comes to European events, we do see quite a few Indians at the major events like the Gibraltar Masters or the Grenke Chess or the Reykjavik Open, but nothing as compared to Middle-East events. Aeroflot Open has many Indians going every year, but that is because the Government takes care of the expenses and it is a part of the exposure trip. There is one tournament that is becoming the most popular hunting grounds for Indian chess players in the Europe - The Sunway Sitges Open. In 2019 it will be held from the 13th to the 22nd of December 2019. This year 75 players out of the 240 participants in the A group are from India! 16 more players will take part in B-group, making it a total of 91 Indians at the event.

            Sunway Sitges Open 2019

            December 17, 2019

            Round Five

            From ChessBase:

            Two leaders after Round 5

Shortly before Christmas there is a new tradition brewing in Sitges, Spain; The "Sunway Sitges International is now in its 6th year is a 10-round Swiss open played from December 13th-22th 2019. Sitges is a popular seaside resort on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, south of Barcelona, and enjoys an average annual temperature of 18 degrees over 300 days of sunshine a year. The tournament is hosted by the Hotel Sunway Playa Golf & Spa.

Narayanan S.L. won with Black over his countryman Sethuraman to move to 5 points after as many rounds, but he was joined late in the day by Anton Korobov who also won with the black pieces over Praggnanandhaa.

Sitges was settled long before the Roman era and over the millennia the inhabitants and visitors of the place have left many traces and cultural monuments. One is Xato, a Catalan speciality that can of course be prepared in different variations. Typical ingredients are endive salad, cod, tuna, anchovy, eggplant and black olives. However, the soul of the dish is the sauce, for which there are of course various recipes, for example, see the original ChessBase article below:

(ChessBase) - Here Pragg can keep the position balanced with 39.Nd6 but his insertion of 39.Rd2 Ng5 40.Rg2 f6! left his e-pawn for dead. Korobov was forced to convert a long rook ending but did so without any problems to claim his share of the lead.

            - after pragg's loss, he gets a nice reward: black against ivanchuk

              Chessbomb kibitzers:

              - Praggnanandhaa is a good player. On the track to be great. Can't blame him for losing to a legend like Ivanchuk at this point.

              - Anyone can lose to Ivanchuk! Doesn't make Pargonada great.

              - Obviously. It's being 2586 at age 14 that makes him impressive.

              - I take it back. If you lose to Ivanchuk, that means you've played against Ivanchuk, and that makes you great by association!

Awonder Liang beat Chucky! Some positions are evaluated equal by the computer but this game was dynamically unclear. 24.Qb3 was a cagey move. I wonder what Chucky missed.

                      Round Eight

                      From Andre Schulz on ChessBase:

In Friday's round eight, Korobov drew again in 30 moves against one of his pursuers — GM Vasif Durarbayli from Azerbaijan. He's joined on 6½ by GMs Igor Kovalenko, Grzegorz Nasuta and Awonder Liang, who upset Ivanchuk in just 31 moves.

                      Position after 30.Qa7

Ivanchuk can fight on with 28...Bc8, but 28...Bg5 allowed the American a chance to wrap things up quickly: 29.c7 Qc5 30.Qb8+ Ke7 31.Bb7 1-0

Kovalenko won in crushing fashion. In the following position can you spot the final blow?

                      Position after 28..Be5

                          Sunway Sitges Open 2019

                          December 22, 2019

                          Round Ten

Anton Korobov won the tournament with 8.5 points out of 10.

Vasif Durarbayli and Svane Rasmus tied for second with 8.0

Abhimanyu Puranik, Di Li, Amin Tabatabaei, Timur Gareyev and Andrea Heimann tied for fourth place. According to the regulations there had to be tiebreaks.

                          The rule:

If there is a tie to points between some of the first 8 classified players in that provisional classification, a match-play tiebreaker will be applied to obtain the final general classification.

This match-play tie-break will consist of an eliminatory system (e.g. quarter-finals, semifinal and final if there are 3 or 4 players tied) among the players who have finished the tournament with the same number of points (no matter if the champion must be determined or not), in the following way:

                          - 2 blitz games with a rhythm of 5 minutes + 3 seconds per play (5 '+ 3 "), alternating colors.

                          - In case of a tie, a blitz game "Armageddon", with 6 minutes for the player with white and 5 minutes for the player with black. The color of each player will be raffled and, in case of draw, the player who has played with black will win.

As of this moment, no other site has written up the finale of this tournament, so the awards might still be subject to change, because the above is my calculation.

This was a very tiring tournament but a splendid one for the young master to get experience in. I wish we had something similar for Canada.
