Montreal Winter Chess Classic (March 2-6, 2020)

We have the pleasure to announce that the Montreal Winter Chess Classic will be held from March 2-6, 2020, at college Jean-de-Brebeuf. This tournament is open to everyone and will feature an IM Norm invitation section (10 players, round-robin). The main goal of this tournament is to provide local players an opportunity to earn an International Master norm. In the second edition of this tournament, Olivier Kenta Chiku-Ratté (Canada) and Dagur Ragnarsson (Island) both achieved an IM norm!

-IM Norm Invitation Section: Round-robin, 10 players. Invitation only.
-A (1800+), B (U1800), C (Juniors U1200): Swiss system, five (5) rounds, open to everyone. Please note that Section A is restricted to players currently or formally FQE-rated at least 1700.

-Time control : 90'/game + 30" incr. starting from move 1 for Invitation, A, B. 60'/end + 30" incr. for C (Juniors U1200)

-Schedule: One round per day at 1pm. For the Invitation Section, rounds will be held at 10am and 3:30pm from March 3-6. One round only on March 2 at 1pm.

-Prizes:

Invitation section : 1st - 1000$, 2nd – 500$
Open section: 1st - 500$, 2nd – 200$
U1800 section: 1st - 250$, 2nd – 100$, 3rd - 50$
Juniors U1200 section: Trophies for top 3 players

David Vigorito is a 49 year-old International Master from Andover, Massachusetts. He is an author of 9 highly acclaimed chess books, including the recently released Playing the Najdorf from Quality Chess. Vigorito is a former state champion of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Nevada. He has been consistently ranked in the top 100 players in the U.S. for over 10 years (highest ranking #35).

Raymond Kaufman is 37 years old and lives in Vancouver, Canada. He has been an International Master for 12 years. He was tied for 1st at the 2018 Canadian Open. His other hobbies include Shogi (Japanese Chess). Kaufman is a MWCC participant for a second time.

IM Thanh Nha Duong's bio:

Thanh Nha Duong is a 49 years old engineer and was born in Vietnam. He became IM by finishing tied for 2^nd place at the Canadian Closed in 1999. Duong was retired from the chess competition for 8 years and has been making a comeback at chess for four years. He participated to all editions of this tournament.

FM Dagur Ragnarsson's bio:

Dagur Ragnarsson is 22 years old and resides in Iceland. He became FM in 2015 and earned his first IM norm in at the Icelandic championship in 2017. In 2019, he earned his second IM norm at the Montreal Winter Chess Classic.
