                FIDE World Blitz Championships 2019

                December 29, 2019

                From the official site:

                https://wrbc2019.com/tpost/idj8drj3f...itz-to-the-top

Carlsen and Lagno blitz to the top

Magnus Carlsen and Kateryna Lagno are leading in their groups after the first day of the World Blitz chess championship in Moscow. After 12 rounds in the Open section, Carlsen (10/12) is half a point ahead of the second-placed Maxim Matlakov (9½/12), while another three players are on nine points. In the Women’s Blitz, Kateryna Lagno is on 8/9. She is chased by four players with seven points.

The World Blitz Championship, which is taking place in the historic Luzhniki Stadium, was opened by Russian footballer and former national team member Evgeni Aldonin, who made the first move on board one, where Hikaru Nakamura was playing Marin Bosiocic.

The first part of the Open tournament saw a surprising performance by the 15-year-old Uzbek GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov who started the Blitz with five wins. The only other player with a maximum score after five rounds was Magnus Carlsen. In Round 6 in a duel between the two, Abdusattorov sacrificed a pawn and played positionally. Carlsen managed to take control of the game by blocking Black’s key pieces, but then the Norwegian blundered his key central pawn. The World Champion couldn’t hide his anger and showed his frustration with a sudden hand movement. The game eventually ended with a draw. Abdusattorov’s performance slipped in the second half of the first day, but with 7/12 and having played some of the strongest players in the Blitz, his score is impressive.

A big surprise in the tournament came in Round 7 which saw Carlsen’s first defeat in the Blitz, having previously won the Rapid without a loss. After drawing his sixth game, Carlsen (who entered round seven with 5½/6) lost to Dmitry Andreikin (8/12), the two-time Russian champion. Carlsen ended in time trouble and his king was in danger. After a few exchanges around the black’s king on the kingside, Carlsen was two pawns down and eventually resigned. This was his first loss having played 21 games in the Rapid and the Blitz without losing. Carlsen quickly brushed off this defeat as in the remaining five rounds he won four games and draw only one – with Nakamura.

The Russian Maxim Matlakov had five points after the first six rounds (four wins and two draws). He then had a series of three consecutive draws followed by three wins which landed him in the second place at the end of the day. Matlakov’s key moment will likely be in the first game of the second day of the Blitz, in Round 13, when he will be facing Magnus Carlsen on board one.

Three players are sharing third to fifth position: Hikaru Nakamura, Daniil Dubov, and Ian Nepomniachtchi. The bronze medalist from the 2018 Blitz in St. Petersburg, Hikaru Nakamura, had the momentum taken away from him in the third round when he suffered a defeat at the hands of Alireza Firouzja (who finished the day with an impressive score of 8/12), and then barely saved a draw in Round 4 against Timur Gareyev (who with 8/12 is someone to watch out for in the final part). Dubov started the Blitz with a loss to Ilia ljiushenok (5½/12) but then regained his confidence and maintained a strong performance until the end of the day, without a loss. Ian Nepomniachtchi suffered two loses in the first day (to Ponkratov (8/12) and B. Socko (8/12)), but won all of his last four games, which will likely bolster his confidence ahead of the decisive day of the Blitz.

Former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik is on 8 points after 12 rounds. Kramnik’s first loss came in Round 5, where he was defeated by Sergey Karjakin (who is on 6½/12). The former world champion lost two more games (to Gabriel Sargissian (8/12) in the seventh round and to Boris Savchenko (8/12) in Round Nine), but secured a place close to the top echelons of the event. Overall, not a bad result so far for someone who has retired from active chess.

Nine games were played on the first day of the Women’s Blitz. Kateryna Lagno showed she was serious about defending her 2018 women's world blitz champion title. She has 8 points out of 9 rounds and has already defeated some of her most likely competitors for the title.
There are four players in the second tier: Alexandra Kosteniuk, Humpy Koneru, Daria Charochkina, and Alina Kashlinskaya, all on 7/9.

Alexandra Kosteniuk finished the day with just one loss (in Round 6, to Gunina) and will face Lagno in the tenth round. The winner of this year’s women’s rapid, Humpy Koneru lost to the day one leader Kateryna Lagno in a dramatic game at the final round of the first day of the Blitz.

Firouzja was up three pawns at the end but flagged after adjusting a fallen piece. But, was there a position that could occur when Carlsen could mate Firouzja? It turned out there was and so Carlsen won. Firouzja appealed, saying that his clock was faulty. The appeals committee said it wasn’t and awarded Carlsen the win.

                            FIDE World Blitz Championships 2019

                            December 30, 2019

                            Summary

Magnus Carlsen and Kateryna Lagno win the World Blitz Chess Championship

Magnus Carlsen has won the Open section of the King Salman World Blitz Chess Championship, which finished in Moscow on Monday evening. The Norwegian Grandmaster previously won the World Rapid Championship, which was played just before the Blitz. In the women’s section, the winner of the Blitz was Kateryna Lagno of Russia (the Women’s Rapid was won by Humpy Koneru of India). Both players repeated their victory in the blitz from last year in San Petersburg.

The winner of the Blitz was decided in the playoff between Magnus Carlsen and American Hikaru Nakamura, as both players had 16½ points each after the 21-round tournament. The first game in the playoff ended in a draw, but Carlsen won the second and, with it, the second crown at this event.

Third place went to former world champion Vladimir Kramnik, who decided to take part in the World Blitz despite leaving active chess a year ago. After his victory in the Rapid, Magnus Carlsen said the job was only “half done” and that he also wanted to win in the Blitz.

Speaking to the media after his victory in the Blitz, Carlsen said that the tie-break was tough. “I’m very pleased with my performance. A lot of the games were rough, but it’s the result that counts. Also, the conditions for playing were very good so I have no complaints about the organization.” [See the full interview with Carlsen on FIDE's Youtube channel]

Asked whether he keeps track of all the big events he won, Carlsen replied – “only the world titles”. So far in his career, Carlsen has three times defended his World Champion title in classical chess and also won three Rapid and three Blitz World Championships.

Altogether this is Carlsen’s third consecutive win in the World Blitz and a third title in the World Rapid – an unprecedented score in chess history. The Norwegian is also the world champion in classical chess (since 2013). By winning both events, Carlsen pocketed $120.000 dollars ($60.000 for each event).

Kateryna Lagno, the winner of the Women’s Blitz, finished the tournament on 13 points out of 17 games. Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine finished second (with 12½/17) and the 3rd and 4th places went to Tan Zhongyi of China and Valentina Gunina of Russia, who both finished with 12 points.

“This was a tough day but – because of a bit of luck – I am very happy. I was White in the final round and I had to play for a win. When I overlooked a pawn, I had to play for a draw, but it worked”, Lagno said. [See the full interview with Lagno on FIDE's Youtube channel]

Comparing this victory to that of last year in the Blitz in St Petersburg, Lagno said that “this year’s tournament was tougher” because several players had chances to be first.

A special prize for the best-combined performance in the Rapid and the Blitz in the Women’s category, awarded by TOTAL (the French energy major), went to Anna Muzychuk.

In the Blitz games, each player had 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment per move, starting from move 1. Altogether 330 players from 44 countries took part in both the Open and the Women’s events and included some of the strongest players in the world.

                              Final Tweets

Anish Giri - Congrats to @MagnusCarlsen and @GMHikaru for their great performances.

As for me, mission to finish as high as possible without getting to face Magnus Carlsen in 21(!) rounds of blitz- accomplished.

Magnus Carlsen - Triple crown again, hope this one will last more than a couple of days!

Hikaru Nakamura - Really proud of the performance I put together on the final day of the @worldrapidblitz, to tie for first, but missing 51.Nc2! (Magnus missed it too) really puts a damper on everything. Congrats to @MagnusCarlsen on winning and @FirouzjaAlireza for inspiring chess!

Nigel Short - There are some advantages to knowing the #FIDE rules. Alireza Firouzja manages to lose a game on time to @MagnusCarlsen that would be a draw if he were playing online.

Vladimir Kramnik on Carlsen - "I wish I had such motivation as Magnus. Of course he's incredible with his level and also his motivation, because he won already everything it's possible to win... What to say? He's the best!"

                              ___________

This was a fun tournament to watch. The commentators and production were first class. Miro was great on the demonstration board, Leko was amusing and informative and Almira was warm and informative. Is it alright to say this?

To have all the games immediately available was a plus for the chess writer and the swift pairings made the whole tournament run smoothly.

To have the Old Guard (Kramnik and Morozevich for example) playing at the same time as the New Guard (Firouzja and Abdusattorov) is very satisfying. I am glad there were two Canadians too enjoying this experience
