  • Looking for 5th 2000+ player

Next month, Canadian Team will be playing in Prague at World Senior Team Chess Championship (WSTCC).

    http://www.wstcc2020.net/information/regulations/

For whom who doesn't want to read the regulations, a few major points.

    1. Schedule Mar 5 - Mar 15, 2020. 1 game per day. TC 90+30+30.

    2. 9 rounds Swiss in 2 sections (50+ and 65+).

    3. 4 boards, some teams have 5 players, some teams have 4.

    4. Our team (D.Cummings - V.Plotkin - I.Findlay - M.Barron) ranked 16 out of 57 preregistered teams according to the average rating.

We played with the same line-up 2 years ago in Dresden and finished 6th, which was a very good result. Our initial plan was to do something similar this year in Prague.

Unfortunately, one of our players has a family issues which could force him to leave the tournament earlier, or even not play at all. In this situation we decided to switch from our traditional 4-men concept and look after 5th player. As a team captain, I sent e-mails to a few veterans, but the schedule didn't work for them. So, Chesstalk is our only chance. If we can find the 5th player - great. If not, we will go 4 and hope for the best.

    Advantages:

    1. Really good, interesting and usually well-organized event.
    2. A lot of famous strong players from other countries.
    3. Prague is probably the most interesting city in the Eastern Europe.
    4. The temperature now around +10, should be around 12-15 in March.

    Disadvantages:

    1. Just 2 weeks before the start of the tournament.
    2. No direct flight Toronto-Prague. I use connection in Warsaw (LOT is good for air miles in Air Canada).
    3. Expenses: around 1200 for flight. 84 EURO/day for single room + meals. 84*11=924 EURO = (1 EUR = 1.43 CAD) 1320 CAD. Registration: 70 EUR (100 CAD).
    Total: about 2600 CAD.

    Requirements for 5th player:

    1. Positive attitude.
    2. FIDE 2000+.

If you have any question/concerns and don't want to discuss them on the public forum, I will be happy to help. My e-mail victorp68 at yahoo dot ca.

I don't qualify either way but you should specify if you're looking for a 50+ player or a 65+.

We play at 50+ section. However, 65+ player can play any section.

This sounds like a wonderful trip! However, the only criteria that I meet is being over 50 and being positive. The FIDE rating and financial considerations are not as positive lol. Have fun guys!

You might ask Jean Hebert or Kevin Spraggett perhaps.

Thanks Louis for the suggestion, but with no conditions to offer, I would be too embarrassed to even ask either one of them. We were thinking more of a player like Sylvain Barbeau who might come forth, but it is a long shot.

Yes, Frank, very good players and they would be welcome. However, it is an expensive trip and everyone has to pay their own way. So in addition to being good player, they must also be fairly well off to afford it. The other bad thing is that if they have a good job, then it would be hard to get time off in such short notice. Our best shot, would be a well off, strong, retired from work player.
I think we have tried all of those. lol
