The chess highlight of 2020 will see Magnus Carlsen bid to defend the World Championship title he won against Vishy Anand in 2013 for a 4th time in a row. The length of the match has been extended from 12 to 14 games, with other changes including a ban on draw offers before move 40, increments only from move 61 onwards, fewer rest days and a prize fund doubled to a minimum of 2 million euros.

The event might be moved to December
This year's main event in the chess world is without a doubt the World Championship match, in which Magnus Carlsen will try to defend his title for a fourth consecutive time. The winner of the coming Candidates Tournament will gain the right to challenge the Norwegian in a 14-game match.
It was previously announced that the match would most likely take place either in Buenos Aires or Dubai, although by now it seems almost certain it will be played in Dubai. Back in January, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich visited the chess festival in Gibraltar and gave an interview to Tania Sachdev. When asked about the WC match, he stated:
Certainly it's going to be toward the end of the year. We're hopeful that we will conclude a contract with the Dubai Expo very soon, and that's the occasion we're looking forward to have the World Championship match, since it will gather hundreds of thousands of people from around the world that will go around the universal expo but will have a chance to visit the World Championship match as well. So we are trying to do it as a top-class event that will be visible not just to the chess audience but to all people around the world.

Magnus Carlsen (29) intends to defend the World Championship title in November. Now, the FIDE president suggests moving and not starting until December 20, 2020.

If so, it will continue well into January 2021. The number of games is increased from 12 - as it has been in all Carlsen’s World Championship matches so far - to 14.
It was at today's youtube-streamed congress in FIDE (International Chess Federation) that President Arkady Dvorkovich uttered the word "informally" and said the following:
- We have almost ended the negotiations with Expo 2020 on the World Championship match. With 99.9 percent security, it will be here in Dubai. Probably the match will start on December 20, 2020.
Then the Russian FIDE president added:
- This is not a formal announcement. Maybe there will be a formal announcement next week, when we have signed the agreement.
Norwegian chess president Morten L. Madsen is in attendance at the congress. He says to VG:
- I can confirm that there is a dialogue between FIDE and a potential organizer about having the event later, but they should not have made a decision yet.
As an explanation of why this happens, Madsen replies that in this case it is about what is best for Expo 2020, both when it comes to collisions with other events, capacity etc.
Expo 2020 is a world exhibition organized by Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It will open on October 20, 2020 and last until April 10, 2021.

This becomes visible not just to the chess audience, but to everyone around the world, Dvorkovich said in an interview with Gibchess, shown on youtube, a month ago.
Usually, the World Championship match runs for three weeks in November, while the World Cup in rapid and blitz chess takes place in December.
Magnus Carlsen's World Cup opponent in 2020 is not known yet. The so-called Candidates tournament, in which eight players are fighting to become Carlsen's opponent, will be held in Ekaterinburg, Russia, from March 15 to April 5.
