  • R.I.P. Max Von Sydow 1929-2020 (cf film 'The Seventh Seal', 1957)

Swedish / French actor Max Von Sydow (1929-2020) died a few days ago. Max had a very long and productive career in theatre and film, during which he was often cast as villains. He played in one James Bond film, one Star Wars film, and many others as well, both in European and North American works, with two Academy Award nominations.

Particularly relevant to this site is his famous chess scene from the Swedish film 'The Seventh Seal' (1957), directed by the legendary Ingmar Bergman. This film is considered among the greatest ever created. In this scene, which lasts throughout the film, with intermezzi cutting in and out, involving other aspects of the story, Sydow, in the role of medieval knight Antonius Block, takes the White pieces in a game against the Grim Reaper (played by Bengt Ekorst), playing Black. The knight Block wishes to continue the game for as long as he can.

I won't spoil the outcome by saying more, for those who wish to discover this film!
