  • Tigran Petrosian and the USSR teams...

I was looking at crosstables from old USSR team championships (of the republics - sometimes called "Spartakiads"). Each of the 15 republics/SSR's (16 before 1956) plus Moscow and Leningrad had a team. Sometimes (rarely) not all were represented.

My question is - why did Tigran Petrosian always represent Moscow (rather than Armenia)? Since he did live in Moscow - was a team determined by the player's home town?

He was born in 1929 in Georgia; moved to Armenia in 1946; then to Moscow in 1949 where he appears to have spent the rest of his life. He died in 1984 and is buried in Moscow's Armenian cemetery. I was surprised at how short a time he actually lived in Armenia, and yet considered an idol there (his image is on the 2000 dram banknote).
